So I Got A Second Job -- Has Anyone Here Ever Done This?
I signed up to take classes to be an umpire for either fast-pitch baseball or slow-pitch softball.

It pays either $50 a game or $75 a game, depending on what type of game it is.

From what I heard, its something that anyone can sign up for. They're looking for umpires for, what I'd imagine are high school or middle school games.

The games themselves are from 5:30 to 8:00 and all-day on the weekends.

It seems like a pretty cool gig. Figure on four or five weekday games and three or four weekend games, that's about $400 or so, right?

Not bad for a part-time job watching baseball and arguing with hysterical parents and coaches.

Thoughts?

2. I umpired softball and refereed a basketball church league.
You will earn your money. The smaller the stakes, the meaner the people.
In that basketball league, it seemed like I teed up a brazillion people
every game.
I'd do it for the money if I had to. I also got paid for keeping the books
for Little League games and for either keeping the books or the clock for
basketball games. I still got crap sometimes doing even that.

5. does the pay that I listed sound about right?
that's what the contact person I've been in touch with is telling me.

I have to go to a 5-week class, which costs $65.

Seems worth it, though. I mean, I could make $60 a day doing a 7-hour shift in a store, or 2-hours watching a baseball game. Seems like a no-brainer. Plus the chance to work all-day on the weekends for $200 or so seems like easy money.

6. Sounds about right.
It can be fun, and you aren't tied down in some store. However, you will not be "watching" the game. There are a lot of rules that can come into play, and you will have to learn how to position yourself. People don't realize what really goes on.
You'll get all that at your training.
I have gotten caught up watching. Didn't do it much.
The players are usually ok. It's the parents and coaches I wanted to toss.

4. Hey Ump!
Wake up, you're missing a good game........ :)
Actually, it's good exercise, you're outside and the kids themselves will be the least of your problems, generally speaking. And it's an easy way to make some money.
