Why do they have Halls of Fame for industries based on fame?

Why do they have Halls of Fame for industries based on fame?
I mean, if you need to be put into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for people to remember you, isn't that proof you don't belong there?

1. I think it's because fame based industries LOVE to pat themselves on the back
Witness Emmys, Oscars, People's Choice, CMA, Golden Globes, Halls of Fame, etc., etc., ad nauseum.

I don't need anyone to tell me whether or not I like the work of an entertainer or an athlete.

2. Academy Awards are fine, though I don't understand the non-academy obsession with them.
An industry rewarding those within the industry for excellence makes sense. The ones I think are silly are the "People's Choice" awards, since you can figure out the people's choice by how much money the movie made.
