Anybody here with Maytag appliance experience?

As some of you know, I'm in the market for a dryer. I found a good deal on a new Maytag, so I'm considering it. I used to have a high opinion of Maytag, possibly based only on the commercials. However, Consumer Reports doesn't rate them particularly high.

Anyone? Good, bad, indifferent?

1. I don't see how you can go wrong with Maytag

I'm still using a dryer inherited from my grandmother, a 1979 model. The washer, a 1964 model, conked out a few years ago and I replaced it with a newer energy efficient Maytag. Great washer.

I had a Neptune, top of the line that was a POS. Maytag isn't what it used to be my friend.

Kenmore gets pretty good reviews these days. I've decided to buy the least expensive unit I can get away with, rather than an expensive one like the Neptune that I thought would last for many years.

or used to. Anyway, the only reason I got a Maytag Neptune was at the time Kenmore didn't offer a front-loading washer. I've had my set since 2000. So far, so good.

16. Maytags are not what they once were

Quality has gone way downhill. But honestly, I don't have any recommendations that are any better. And don't think a higher price equals a better machine. Frequently the higher end items are the same as the cheaper ones. They just have more bells and whistles to go wrong.

I've had a couple of sets of Maytags over the years, and NO complaints!

Mine run perfectly until they get to be about 20 years old, and then we replace them...

18. We've had a Neptune washer and dryer for ten years. A couple of problems with the washer

none with the dryer. Even the washer has been good--it was a new design at the time, and it's had a couple of quirks, but it's been a great machine.

As for Consumer Reports, I've found that the quickest way to make a stupid choice is to rely on them. I used to sell luggage, and their choices were always horrible, to the point where I doubt they are really as independent of corporate influence as they claim. You'd have to be on the take to make the recommendations they did. I've also had bad luck as a consumer when I've followed their advice.

I had a magtag washer and dryer that lasted over 20 years. Bought new magtags when the washer bottom finally rusted out. Biggest pieces of shit I have ever bought. The washer needed work within the first year and it went downhill from there.

20. I sold appliances before LK was born. Here's the skinny:

Maytag used to make good shit because they made them in the US and their workforce stayed with them forever. Very old school. Then, like everybody else, they started making stuff elsewhere (Mexico in this case,) using labor enough cheaper that even when transporting really heavy stuff that much farther it was still significantly more profitable. As a result, quality suffered, and they're really not worth the premium price.

Now as far as dryers go, they all work about the same. There are a lot of extra bells and whistles but they're mostly for special care fabrics, and since your laundry consists mostly of t shirts, shorts and various dog-related blankets and towels, you don't need that. What you need to do is get the biggest dryer you can get. For convenience sake I think one where the door opens by folding down is better, because it keeps things from falling on the floor. If you washer dryer is in the living area of your house (I didn't notice) you should get one that's relatively well insulated so it doesn't throw off heat, which generally means not the cheapest model, but not that you have to go way expensive (the insulation will also keep it quieter, and is usually labeled related to that.)

To summarize:

You need a large drum, minimal extra features, and should look for a door that opens down and some insulation if possible. Whirlpool (most Kenmore stuff is rebadged Whirlpool, but sometimes it's GE, you can usually tell by looking) or Amana both made stuff that'd work nicely back when I was selling appliances and likely still do, product lines change rather slowly.

If you can score a floor model or scratch and dent item, the price is generally more negotiable.
