14. In terms of greatness, the Stone Roses could've been close, if they hadn't imploded

after their first album. Seriously, I find the self-titled debut so mindblowingly amazing (bar a couple of slightly lesser tracks) that I'd even put it above 'London Calling' as my favorite album of the last 30 or so years.

Paul Stanley was Lennon, Gene Simmons was McCartney, Ace Frehley was Harrison and Peter Criss was Starr. They had 2 main singer/songwriters, a lead guitar player who occasionally contributed a great song, and a drummer who also wrote/ sang a few songs. Fans of both bands divided into camps for their favorite band member. KISS was wildly popular, sold an abundance of plastic trinkets and doo dads, and even made a movie. The only band big enough to put out 4 solo lps at one time besides KISS was the Beatles.

Plus both bands put out their best material in their first 4-5 years though hardcore fans would disagree. John, Paul, George and Ringo. Gene, Paul, Ace and Peter. Sad but true. :(

i think what made the beatles great was how they crafted really good music that influenced the next couple generation of musicians. using that as criteria i would say the ramones crafted some really good music, and influenced the punk movement and the various incarnations aftr.

No one has matched the cultural impact the Beatles had. You can argue that other bands had an effect on the sound of popular music that might rival the Beatles, but no one has since changed the cultural landscape the way the Beatles did.
