Okay, let's cut the BS. Name/post your one absolute favorite song ever.
Edited on Tue Jan-13-09 10:55 AM by PeterU
The rules are: You can only post one.

It can be from the biggest multi-platinum A-list megaband, or some obscure band that plays at the the bar down the street that no one has ever heard of. It doesn't matter. All I want you to do is name the one song. The one song that is greater than all others in your mind, and will forever be the best song ever. The song to end all songs. The one that you will sorely miss after your dead and gone because you know you'll never get to hear it again.

So I'm asking you one question:

What's your favorite song ever?

(And let's all be honest here. That means no Rick-Rolling. :) Also, be respectful of other's choices. Let's keep it civil. )

43. Me too.
Willie wrote it, sang it, but Kermit made it magical.

I played it during my graduating powerpoint presentation from an internship program that qualified me to become a classroom teacher.

6. Starla--Smashing Pumpkins
Edited on Tue Jan-13-09 10:50 AM by PeterU
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pnFeCex032g

I was listening to it yesterday and it gave me chills. It always gives me chills, no matter how much I listen to it. I just think it is absolutely amazing how a song can be so simultaneously hard rocking and yet so asthetically beautiful at the same time. Usually it is one or the other, but the Pumpkins to me are the masters of both. Yes, Billy Corgan may be an egotistical a-hole, but damn it if he isn't sheer genius in his musical and lyrical abilities.

62. There's a certain note, about 9:30 into the song, where Billy's guitar is literally howling.
Literally. It howls.

That whole guitar solo takes my breath away every time I hear it.

Leave it to the Pumpkins to release a B-side album that objectively passes the quality of most bands A-sides.

7. Danzig - "Ashes"
I used to be friends with the guys in the band, and once had Glenn sing my then 3-yr-old daughter to sleep on the bus with this; he was still working on writing it.

He once told me that my daughter was the only kid he had ever enjoyed being around. This song is a perfect memory of that time. He also 'dedicated' "Mother" to me from the stage, which embarrassed the hell out of me for all of 3 seconds. *L*

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oFXxPKTvXkQ

And the burning of the embers
Slowly down inside
I will keep you warm this darkness
As the ashes die

I will call your soul in winter
I will keep you mine
I will call you soul and winter
As the ashes die

I will keep you broke and splintered
I will keep you tight
I will keep you cold and dark
Till the end of time

And the soul is slowly seeping
As the years go by
Will you keep me cold and darkened
Till the end of time

I will keep you safe from summer
I will be entwined
I will keep you cold and darkened
Till the end of time

I will kiss your burning embers
I will watch them die
I will catch your soul escaping
As the ashes fly

I will keep you safe from summer
I will be entwined
I will keep you cold and darkened
Till the end of time

9. My favorite band, and my favorite song...
Hoodoo Gurus- 1000 Miles Away

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HDlavnA1ck8

It's been misinterpreted as an anti-touring tirade by some, but truly- the song is about feeling constrained by relationships, and wanting to flee from them.... It just speaks volumes to me.

Lyrics:
Estimated time of arrival 9.30 a.m.
Been up before the sun and now I'm tired before I even begin.
(Now you're flying) I got so much work in front of me,
(Really flying) it stretches out far as the eye can see.
I can see.

Spend half my life in airports doing crosswords and attempting to sleep,
And when the bar is open then you'll often find me warming a seat.
(Now you're flying) I never find a place where I can stay
(Really flying) I'd rather be a thousand miles away.
Thousand miles away.

Working for yourself sometimes ain't all that it's cracked up to be.
It can be as lonely at the top as at the bottom of that corporate tree
(Now you're flying) I'm told I'm going places - who can say ?
(Really flying) I might arrive but I'll be gone the very next day.
I must be on my way
A thousand miles away.

Promised to myself someday I'd take the time and try to make sense
Out of all those opportunities I've lost from trying to sit on the fence
(Now you're flying) But right now I've got no time for yesterday
(Really flying) Yesterday's a thousand miles away.
A thousand miles away.

What was that that you were trying to say ?
I guess I was a thousand miles away.

covering it ever since. Truly one kick ass song.

(I have regretted my choice of usernames as it always leads to confusion! HuskerDU is for the old 1980s band and not Nebraska! In fact I am an Iowa Hawkeye fan who doesn't care much for Nebraska hehe. But thank you and that is cool that the FIL was a 'Husker.)

http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewProfile&friendID=422484642

This is the final verse (of about 40) and just this alone propels it above pretty much about everything else out there.

"True is the scent which mimics organic drones, of fact in flesh and blood. If true love and all of its belongings were subservient to the needs of man then bliss would be all that is, was, what will always be. But true love has never served man except as shadow, crossover dimension of illusion. An intersection of possibility as executioner of orgasmic continuance. As an evil time creeps desperate within, igniting emotional need ablaze as wildfire much too gargantuous to contain. Prove me wrong and I will love you truly."

61. "Contrasong" by Egg
Gazing quite vacantly into space one day sitting up in my bed
surrounded by a few Sunday papers and their colour supplements
all of them superficially interesting happily unaware that somewhere
somebody was aware that somewhere somebody was awake
and well undisturbed living on

Glancing quite speedily through assortments of horrible illustrations
of atrocities and apologies of editors but they felt it was necessary
for people to see the pictures on no account were they attempting
to boost their paper's circulation I felt a wave
closed my eyes which was worse

Nevertheless I was I suppose quite at ease at home
with my food brought up at intervals to my bed with all the sympathy I could want
and with all the time in the world to write thank-you letters to
all the people kind enough to send Christmas presents
when they knew I was really very insignificant
