OK, I officially hate my job
I had to construct the most contrived queries to give data to some suits, and the database design is a horrible nightmare. I spent all day nudging and mixing SQL, and came up with nothing, as if, no results returned. I know the data is there, though. And I just FEEL the solution is going to look even more horrible than what I've been trying. And it will take a horrible amount of queries, and take a horrible amount of time to execute.

I can barely grasp the data organization as it is. F**k, I wish I could find a more tech-oriented position. I feel like a dumb failure. It's 9 pm.

Someone please shoot me.

2. You're gonna want to shoot me
But that sounds like a fascinating puzzle.

I LOVE database stuff and desperately need to get certified or degreed or something in it so I can get a job in that field.

I'll happily trade you my day of working with telephone cables the size of my arm in mid 40's (F) mud w/ drizzle ( :

3. no its probably not your fault
if the database is unnormalized or if there are nulls in the data, it may be mathematically impossible to get the correct result. Look up the truth table for your query.

6. I DID IT
I was comparing a field as numeric when in fact it was char. Mind you, it SHOULD be numeric.

A night's sleep does wonders.

7. Get the Bobs on it

You know, human beings were not meant to sit in tiny cubicles staring at computers all day, filling out useless forms and ... oh, shoot, I forget what else ... but add constructing contrived queries to an incomprehensible nightmare database for ungrateful suits to the list. I'm off to sit in my space that's not tiny or a cubicle, but it's not an office either, not exactly staring at my computer but endlessly rearranging pages and words and graphics on pages that will eventually be read by people who probably sit in tiny cubicles, knowing I need to finish that so I can look at a stack of reports generated from an incomprehensible database and construct some contrived questions to ask people who probably sit in tiny cubicles, but I probably won't get to it because I'll be continually interrupted by phone calls that will result in more word, graphic, and page rearranging. PC load letter!

8. What about 17 SELECTs in a single union?
And that's for only one of the many variations they want.

Now get this: the DB choked on that, I'll have to do the SELECTs separately and sum by hand.

Can I apply for political refugee status now?
