I'd go to Belize, maybe Costa Rica.

Unless you have a certain amount of income ($1000/month?), you can only stay a few months at a time. Some Americans and Europeans do live down in Central America because it is very cheap there: you can rent an apartment or room for anywhere from 100-200 $ /month, and cheap food can be had at the local outdoor markets for cheap (veggies and fruit quite cheap compared to USA). You can live there with your own apartment or a nice room for about $400/month, or perhaps 250 if you are REALLY cheap.

Some expats often stay for 3 months in one of the Cent Am countries, and then travel by bus to a neighboring country for a few days, and then return, or simply rent another apartment in the neighboring country for several months.

Guatemala is probably the cheapest.

Problems with living in Cent America:

crime: it is worse than here, and it is not that uncommon for buses to be held up. Also, white people may be singled out for muggings on the street.

disease: malaria is not uncommon. However, in Guatemala, you can get away from it in many of high altitude cities.

Other diseases are common, such as Chagas. Also, you would have to be careful with your food. But medical care is much cheaper.

Belize would be a very close second. The only problem I have with Belize is living with hurricane season. There's no reasoning with that.
