The Big Island of Hawaii is not much more expensive than many places on the mainland....(125-150K for a 3br/2bth House with a bit of land)...With pollution on the rise why not disconnect from contributing to global warming and increased pollution?
Withdrawl from "consumer culture".

I'm on the verge of selling what I have and making the move. Live simply...garden, solar water heater and electric, fish, goats, chickens, electric car and bike for transportation. With Peak Oil and Cataclismic Climate change from global warming threatening massive spike in energy prices and ultimately global COOLING as end result of global warming (a drop of 25 degree if the Gulf Stream inverts) why not make the move sooner rather than later?

4. I'm not sure Hawaii would be a good choice
What about the other several million people there who are completely dependent on imports to survive? You're garden is going to look mighty tasty to them if Peak Oil comes to pass in your lifetime.

Hell, you're going to look pretty tasty to them.

6. You might want to read the book, "So You Want To Live In Hawaii."

I can't remember the author's name, but I'm sure you could find it at amazon.com or some such site.
