my wallet and keys got stolen, and my dead hard drive cannot be read.
i was shopping today at the thrift store, buying clothes that were both decent and warm to wear on my trip to the inaugural today, and my wallet was stolen out of my coat pocket. all my keys were attached to it, so all my id, keys, everything is all gone. looked all over the store to see if it was dumped on the floor, but nothing.
luckily, my daughter was home as was able to both bring me spare car keys, and bring me cash so that i could buy the clothes that i had spent so much time and ATTENTION picking out.
the car key is one of those tweety things, and is $180 to replace. wallet had $200 in cash. not too much in the way of cards, just a couple of debit cards, and my drivers license.
but i am traveling to dc on sunday, and need to get a new drivers license fast.
i was consoling myself that i have all the stuff i will need to do that in my little safe in my closet. but guess where is the only key to the safe? with the gone keys.
gonna dig through some stuff and see if the other key that came with it is somewhere. but i got a feeling me and my angle grinder have a job to do.

and i got a call from the data recovery guys, who i was prepared to give my first born, to recover the data from a year and a half of work that was on my disc drive that died before christmas. there was stuff that i just can not replace. a lot of work. no, it was not backed up.
they said, no go. the head failed and scraped up the platter, and there was nothing to recover.

oh happy day.
tuesday, just gotta keep thinking about tuesday.

1. Since they have your address and keys
have you had the locks changed on your house?

A man in Columbus stole a woman's car that had her house keys in the glovebox. He came back to her house. She's dead. Her son was molested (he's 4) and was left at a rest stop on the interstate miles from the boys house. I know that's extreme, but...

2. i suspect that is a little much for the guy that took them. i know who it was.
i saw him following me around the store. he didn't take the car, even though he could have. one thing about those little beepers, if you have the key you can find the car.
he looked like a down on his luck guy. an old man. i am hoping they will turn up in the next couple days. it is not that unusual.

on a good note, tho, i did find a key to the safe.

3. Hit the safe with a hammer, or do like I did...
Accidentally drop it on the floor and find out a key was never needed to make it open

Sorry you went through all that, but I am so jealous of you right now I could sppit!

You get to go to the Inaugural! :bounce:  :kick:

:(

Reading upthread I see that you know who did it. I hope he really, badly, desperately needed that money to put you through this. And even then, it still sucks.

I'm glad you found the key to the safe. I hope you still change the locks. You have no idea who he might give those keys to.

7. well, fuck. the were using my credit card.
didn't have to call the bank, they called me. seems someone bought 4 tanks of gas with one of my debit cards. shit.
guess i need a couple new locks. at least my aversion to keys and locks saved me from having to change every lock on the house. i only had the front door keys on my chain.
fuckity, fuck fuck fuck.
$180 for a new set of cool clicky beepy car keys. damn. i hate progress ;-P
