6. well, if there were cell phones back then
all the kids wouldn't have to run all over the place, delivering messages....

They did get a phone line in though, eventually, but no cell service...Mrs. Oleson was very upset about the no cell service....

9. Nellie, unavoidably a rich-bitch apple snob, would have had the iPhone --
... I hated her. But yet and still, she was hot. I would have loved to have caught her faking invalidness that one time, and demanded sex for blackmail. (yes, it is late tonitght. And fuck you, iPod kids -- if you grew up in the late 70s and/or early 80s, you'd have Nellie and/or blind hot sister issues yourself!)

12. Funny--I saw an episode where a phone is installed in someone's home
and I thought to myself that it probably wasn't realistic. Yes, phones may have been available in the late 1870s (?), but having them in one's home was probably not common until after the turn of the century...I dunno, but I think it was a device for info to quickly reach a particular character.

30. phones started going into middle class homes in the east in the 1880s
In the 1870s the local post office, telegram office, big bank, or perhaps a large town's city hall. I don't think you could call out of state until the 1880s, so lord knows who the Olsens would've called in 1876.

36. I've been there too. Small club I'm sure LOL.
Took a trip a few years back tracing the route of Laura and family from Pepin, WI to DeSmet, SD then on to Mansfield, MO to see where Laura ended up settling for good. Really cool, took the books with me and enjoyed the whole thing. I've loved her books since childhood. Still read them every so often.

And Walnut Creek was my both my favorite AND least favorite stop. Favorite because the family who own the land where Laura's cabin stood are very, very gracious and open their place up to visitors...you can walk along Plum Creek! It's really neat to do. Least favorite because the local Shop/Museum dedicated to LIW was supposed to be open until 5:00 (it was a Wednesday), but the really obnoxious lady who was running it closed up for the day as we pulled in - at 4:30pm. She was really hostile to boot because we asked her why she was closing early. Guess you don't do that in Walnut Creek. I had seen what I wanted back at the creek, though, so no biggie.

We did find a good pizza there, in a gas station of all places. :-)

16. I figure the actress who played Mrs. Olsen must have had a blast
she was the only character really allowed to let it fly.

Nellie was played by a kid, so she probably didn't relish or enjoy playing a bad guy the way an older actor would.

27. I think she did enjoy it
I've read interviews by the woman who played Nellie and she said by an interesting coincidence, she and her friends were obsessed with the movie The Bad Seed, and whenever it was on they have a party to watch it and dress like the bad seed girl. And this was before she'd been cast to play Nellie, that's why she was so good at playing the part, she really understood Nellie and enjoyed playing her.

It's amazing how many plots of old shows and movies would be rendered instantly pointless if mass market consumer cell phones existed in their time.

80s sitcoms especially.

39. Hee hee
well I wasn't thinking about Pa using the clotheslines to get to/from the house & barn, but Laura & Carrie walking home from school after the blizzard hit. I think Cap Garland may have had a GPS, because he was the only one to head into town; the rest headed out to open prairie & only came back when Laura slammed into the side of the hotel.

a few cell phones are unearthed from archaelogical digs. Teams of academics spend dozens of years trying to understand the workings and then decode the messages within; only to determine they've no resources to tell them what a KIBO, a H4XX0R or a BFF is.
