Shit. My wife is going out of town tomorrow, but my stepson isn't going with her.
In other words, I'll be alone, but I won't get any peace and quiet. He'll just lay around his room, watching loud, obnoxious television shows with lots of bleeping. I won't be able to do homework, or study, or get roaring drunk in blissful solitude.

Shit.

1. Headphones?
I used to do that when I had to write papers and my stepson was here (we have him every other weekend). He was under strict orders not to come into the bedroom where I was working unless he was spurting blood or the house was on fire (not that this was terribly successful, but it usually bought me some time).

Sorry to hear about your situation. It's frustrating.

2. Yes, but put the headphones on the stepson...
thus quieting his noisemaking teevee shows

Or pay him to go away. They (adults) used to do that to me when I was 9 or 10. Sad, I know.

3. Bribing him won't work. He's a 25 year-old union iron-worker. He makes more money
than I do. Plus, he's had an attack of kidney stones. That's why he can't go with my wife. He has a legitimate excuse to stay in bed, but it wouldn't really be any different if he were in perfect health. He's always laying around. Maybe if I'm here all the time, he'll go over to his girlfriend's house...

15. If he is a 25 yr old worker with a well paying job,
isn't it about time he listened to blaring music and tv at his own place?

6. Yeah, no kidding. He was staying with us while he went to college. But he dropped out
in the Fall, and he's just been hanging around, taking up space. Even my wife is getting sick of him. He promised to move out last month, but then claimed that the apartment he wanted "wasn't available." He's like a spy; if I get rip-roaring drunk, he's going to report it to my wife when she gets back.

Damn. I'd give anything for some peace and quiet. :banghead:

5. Is the library open?
Go study there if you can. That way you can at least get a few hours in with a minimum of distraction.

Or better yet, tell your stepson that you'd like to study and he needs to either make himself scarce or be quiet enough that there's no effective difference. If my seven year old can understand "be quiet please, I'm studying" be can do it too.

7. That does not sound pleasant at all.
Why the hell is a 25 year old who has a job still living with his mom?

14. Well, he's gone now. Took off with his girlfriend. maybe they'll stay at her place for the weekend.
Then I can drown my sorrows in peace. Got a call from my wife. She made it safely to L.A. (I was praying for a skilled, brave pilot for her just like our new hero!)

22. Oh, yes, you can. It's YOUR house.
Tell him to take it to his girlfriend's house (why the hell do they BOTH need to be in your house??) or at the very least to his own room. Your TV room, your TV, your rules.

19. Dude, this is totally your chance to bond with him. Take him fishing or go to a batting cage
Build those family memories while you can. Before you know it, he'll turn 30 and start moving out on his own...

Until he came here for a semester, and ended up staying for three years...
