Tucson Citizen to cease publication March 21 if no buyer found:

ARTHUR H. ROTSTEIN
The Assoicated Press

Gannett Co. Inc. will close the Tucson Citizen if it does not find a
buyer for "certain assets" by March 21.

Robert J. Dickey, president of Gannett U.S. Community Publishing, made
the announcement in a brief meeting with employees Friday.

"The Tucson Citizen has been part of Gannett since 1976, and we deeply
regret having to take this step," Dickey said. "But dramatic changes in our
industry combined with the difficult economy — particularly in this region —
mean it is no longer viable for our partnership with Lee Enterprises Incorporated
to produce two daily newspapers in Tucson."

The Citizen, an afternoon newspaper, operates under a joint operating agreement
with the Arizona Daily Star, a morning paper owned by Davenport, Iowa-based
Lee Enterprises Inc. Print production, distribution, sales and other non-editorial
functions for both the Citizen and the Star operate under the name Tucson Newspapers Inc.

Ptah says: "Assoicated" is copied from the Tucson Citizen website.

9. Nope
I just remember he was a lot happier about some book he'd written than about being a reporter.

11. I don't think I would
I remember him saying he got bupkis from the book deal, after the publisher and his agent took like 95 percent.

You get bupkis as a reporter, but at least you know you're gonna get bupkis.

12. If you do your homework
you know that chances are you'll get bupkis for a book deal, too.

Do you remember if he was news or sports? I'm going nuts tryin' to figure out who it was. There was a guy from 'ccino who worked here...wonder if that's the guy you're thinkin' of.

13. News
And the book was some kinda "exploring Colorado" thing, I think.

It might've been that guy who went to Beaumont to be AME of sports and features.

Ziz would know.

14. Well there ya go
'exploring Colorado' books are a dime a dozen. They're a nuisance. Now, maybe if he'd written something about 'avoiding' Colorado 'stead of 'exploring' it, he'da had sumpin'.

How's Ziz doin' these days?

5. Didn't notice that
Not surprising, though. The first people to go in newsroom cuts are copy editors.

7. Nah
If somebody wanted to do that, they'd be much more creative.

I used to know a sportswriter who got a job at another paper. On his last night at the paper where I knew him, he slipped the details of his "trade" into the "Transactions" column.

He was an asshole, but that was damned clever.
