2. I have taken trains

across the US and have travelled by train in Canada. Always, even at the worst, enjoyable.

I would love to never have to drive again, and spend my travel time on trains being able to sleep, read, or go to the dining car, or just get up and stretch whenever I want...

So close in fact that some operators still *ding!* hubby when he gets out of the car like he's going to fall into the train. Freight & Amtrak rails crisscross the area so we got trains

16. Love them...have dragged my family along on two lovely trips...

The first, when our son and daughter were roughly 8 and 6, started at 30th Street Station in Philly. Overnight, with a 6 (?) hour layover in Chicago and then on to Santa Fe.
(two nights for that leg...the first morning we woke up at 7 AM pulling into Dodge City.
The second... after time at a Montana dude ranch (great place) we drove North to Havre, and got on the Empire Builder to Seattle.

Oh yeah, and my husband and I took the Ghan from Adelaide to Alice Springs in Australia a few years back.

And I'm happy to travel Amtrak up to New York or down to Washington any chance I get.

I love trains. I wish my children were still young enough to be dragged along.

That a great way to travel. At least back when rail passes were reasonable cheap. Though later I preferred Europe by bike.

Trains in India are an experience, especially travelling Third class.

Burma is another story. The trains out to Pagan, then back were the most uncomfortable journeys I've ever taken. The seats were literally a pain in the ass.

33. I LOVE trains. I grew up in the 50's riding the 20th Century Limited

and Sunset Limited from NYC to Los Angeles. My Dad hated flying, and when we would visit
family on the west coast (we lived in NJ) we always took the train.

I love traveling by train in Europe. Wish we had better train service in the US now.

41. Yes, trains are a great way to travel

You don't have to drive, but you still get to see the countryside. I've really enjoyed traveling through England and Japan by train, seeing the landscape change, watching the farms and villages go by, talking to fellow travelers, getting up and walking around when I feel like it. Even my trip to Chicago in 2005 was fun, as the train traveled right along the Mississippi River and through the small towns of Wisconsin.

...passenger rail service in most of the states is horrible. Ridiculously overpriced private cabins, and terribly slow. The scenery on trips I've taken was nothing great, either. I swear, we must have passed by or through every major auto graveyard, city slum, and popular serial killer body drop local in each state.
