Just watched "The Concert for George" on PBS

Wow. Normally I hate the twenty-guitar-players-on-stage thing (vis. the Prince's Trust concerts), but this thing was more like Scorsese's Last Waltz. If you're a fan of George Harrison, Tom Petty, Eric Clapton, or beautiful pop music in general, I highly recommend it.

1. I watched it too

Moved me to fucking tears. Jeff Lynne playing with Shankar's daughter (can't think of her name at the moment) that was something else!!! Incredible. Clapton doing While My Guitar Gently Weeps with SO much emotion. I even thought Michael Palin was having a rough time getting through the Lumberjack song!

George Harrison GAVE more love than most of us will know in a lifetime.

4. enjoyed Clapton playing wth the Indian musicians

tht was pretty cool. I agree the whole thing ws done with much style and came off great. Tom Hanks was there and I doubt anyone who was farther back than the twentieth row knew it-that's how cool it was.

7. Two points here:

1. It was back in the fabled 60s when Wilson Pickett returned from England, impressed by the fact that "they'll have 10 guitar players up there on stage and they'll all be in tune!"

2. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers rule the Known Universe. That was SOME fearlessness from Mike Campbell on the "Taxman" solos!

9. I missed the first half, but...

I did get to see them play Isn't it a Pity, My Sweet Lord and Wah Wah--one of my favorites! I've gotta get the DVD!

10. The broadcast was edited...get the DVD!

The DVD is the complete, uncut show, and it's AMAZING. If Billy Preston's rendition of "Isn't It A Pity" doesn't bring you to the brink of tears, you have no soul.

11. Yep, WOW

Sadly I only caught parts of it. To keep family peace the wife had to warch Steven King's show, so I only got to tune in during the commercials.
I'll catch it during the fundraiser.

In fact "liking it" is far too tepid a description. It blew me away, especially, Billy Preston's gorgeous versions of My Sweet Lord and Isn't It a Pity. Even Paul McCartney's contributions were understated and lovely. His harmonies with Eric Clapton on Something really were Something! And I even liked Wah-Wah, which I didn't like at all when it first came out, but which really struck me last night as being oddly beautiful.
