1. Is Larry playing the bongos?
It's very different. This may take some getting used to.

2. definitely a change in direction
supposedly Brian Eno helped them bring back the experimentation for this album

I think this one's going to grow on me

3. I expect it will for me, too.
But I, for one, do not want a return to the Zooropa/Pop type of experimentation.

I'm waiting until this comes out to use my Christmas iTunes gift card.

skip to the four-minute mark and you'll hear a brief bit of another new song, said to be titled "Breathe"
A bit more classic-sounding.

5. Ugh. I stopped listening to them and to R.E.M. right around that time.
I could not stand what U2 was up to on the whole ZooTV stuff.

They redeemed themselves at All That You Can't etc.

I still haven't gotten any R.E.M. since Automatic for the People.

To each our own, eh?

6. you might like the newest REM album
it feels closer to their 80s stuff than their last several CDs worth of stuff

8. A wish REM would go back to their jangle roots
The Chronic Town/Murmur/Reckoning/Fables of the Reconstruction run was remarkable. Scott Litt made a mess by trying to make them more radio friendly.

7. Oh, shit, not Eno
Every time he shows up, one of the all-time great rock bands degenerates into Bono's Eurotrash Poseur Posse.
