i just watched a fucker in front of me hit a dog

i swear it was like he tried to. he slowed down and then STILL hit the dog.

the poor thing tried to drag itself off with just it's front legs. the back portion of its body wasn't moving and seemed paralyzed. i think its back was broken. it was also bleeding from the eyes and nose and foaming badly. poor thing.

put it in the back of the van and took it to the vet because the idiot who hit it just kept going. they'll likely have to put it down. they're supposed to call with news, but it's in obvious pain and i'm sure that it has been put down.

It came from out of nowhere and was on my passenger side where it was not as visible. I immediately stopped my car and approached the poor kitty. It was no match for the weight of my vehicle. Since I was in a cul-de-sac, I screamed at the kids standing nearby to get some help as I cradled the poor kitten. A few seconds later, it let out a small breath and died. I felt horrible, and still feel horrible, although there was nothing I could have done to prevent it.

this just was so bizarre.. the man was stopping and then it was like he decided to go ahead and hit the dog and put on the gas.. it was crazy. then he kept going while the dog attempted to drag itself off the street. :(

plus it is really the responsibility of the owner to keep the animal out of harm's way. I own pets and I know sometimes they get away from you despite your best attempts but in the horrid event that my animal should get hurt on one of these occasions I would certainly never blame the person who hit them (well unless they did it deliberately). As was mentioned, accidents happen and I tend to think mostly the fault lies with the owner who failed to keep their animal under control, again, I know it's not always possible but it's still the owner's responsibility. It's normal to feel bad for unintentionally harming an animal -- means you're a person with a soul I think -- but it really was most likely not your fault.

and love on it before it was put down. the person it loved and that loves it should've been able to be there for it. i was so upset that i couldn't find the owner before they had to put him down. knocked on doors for about an hour, but couldn't find the owner. :(

It was on a dark country road, and the dog ran right in front of my car. I stopped and searched, but never found it. Decades later, I still feel bad about it, and wonder what became of that animal.

Cars and pets don't mix, and sometimes we can't avoid tragedy. But to just drive away? That's cold and unfeeling.

Only traveling about 25 mph on a narrow residential street. My attention was focused on an oncoming driver who I knew had the sun in his eyes and this little dog just ran out out in front of me. I straddled him and hit him with my differential. I tracked down his owner and we got him to the vet and the dog survived.

18. UPDATE: i just got back from the vet

he had to be put down. i knocked on doors for about an hour trying to find the owner to let them know that he was at the vet. the dog was well taken care of and obviously loved. it had a collar but no tags. i got a call about an hour after knocking on doors from the vet saying that his spinal cord was severed and that he would have to be put down. went up to the vet and pet on the dog and loved on it while it was still conscious because it deserved to have some love before it was put down. then i cried like a baby in the vets office, even though the dog wasn't mine i didn't know it.


i can't stand when people hit an animal and then don't stop to even try to do anything for it, even if it is just putting it out of its misery. *sigh*

I'm in tears reading this thread. :cry: 26 years ago a hit-and-run driver plowed my yellow lab down in a 15mph zone and kept on going. Duppers' (yes, my handle honors her) spine was severed too--she died on the x-ray table at the emergency vet's. Her death ranks within the top 5 tragedies of my life. Assholes have no idea what a dog can mean to its loving owners.

Permit me a small boast and let me say that my neighborhood on the lakefront of Chicago (north side) I've never seen a dog or animal abused in the smallest way nor even seen a stray dog running the street and this is in 10 years.
