I'm on vacation next month...have no idea where to go...
I think I wanna clear out of Massachusetts for a few days, go somewhere warm, and loaf.
Any suggestions for the modestly budgeted vacationer?

3. They Keys are pretty much the same all year round
80s in the day. 60s at night. Perfection. and they're really cool, especially Key West. San Fran's weather can be wierd. The sort of havee microclimates within the city. You can be in one spot and it'll be 50 and misty, while it's 75 and sunny in ano0ther part of town. I'd go with the Keys.

4. Sanibel Island in Florida is always nice..
Edited on Thu Mar-04-04 10:41 AM by SoCalDem
:)

San Francisco is pretty temperate all year long.. It rains a bit, but a week in San Fran could set you back about as much as Tahiti :)

6. I used to go to Sanibel in the early 60s
And it was paradise. Two motels and a general store. Went back one time when I was in college and the place was totally built up. What a shame.

8. Wasn't Florida lovely back then??
Edited on Thu Mar-04-04 12:38 PM by SoCalDem
It was so great to just be driving along, see a cool beach...pull over, climb down a dune and take a swim.. And we used to love the funky orange juice stands all over.. Remember the little plastic orange things with a short straw in them?? Nothing better than fresh squeezed juice.. I loved it warm and fresh.. That nasty homogenized refrigerated stuff is awful :(

Very sad to know that it's all gone now :(

16. The whole state was a lot less touristed
Edited on Thu Mar-04-04 02:00 PM by bif
On Sanibel you could walk for miles and miles and it was pure jungle right down to the shore. No houses at all. I remember going up the Gulf side and my Dad would pull over and we'd run down to a totally deserted beach so my brothers and I could "explore." Wow. Those days are long gone. My Dad winters down there now and said there's a key he visits in northwestern Florida that's an old-time fishing village. He's says it's still like the Florida of old.

that's what picture came in my head when you explained where you wanted to go. Nice relaxed place to go with a little history on the side.

14. "Undiscovered country"..........sorry
not anymore. Over the past 15 years the Outer Banks of NC has become very commercial and a east coast vacation hot spot. The beaches have become more crowded and cottage rentals and hotel rooms have been drastically elevated in price.

My family used to make the OB our normal vacation spot from the early 60's (when my mom's folks used to go) through the 70's to early 80's, when I would go with my fam for luxurious 2-week vacations in a oceanside cottage. It was relatively cheap back then. Now, the prices and amount of people visiting there makes the place a shadow of its former self.

However, if you don't mind the crowds and haven't been, it may be worth a look.

12. The Keys!
Fly into Ft Lauderdale, rent a car, and drive down A1A to Card Sound Rd in Key Largo and keep going all the Way to Key West!

Great fun and it won't break the bank.

Enjoy!

15. Think Carolinas and Georgia
Florida has good weather but is very busy in April with the spring-break/Easter crowd. The Carolina and Georgia coasts also have very nice, if somewhat cooler, weather this time of year, but they're in the off season so they're really cheap. Topsail Island in North Carolina is very nice. Or you might try the Golden Isles in Georgia.
