This Board DESPERATELY needs a Superman thread...
Edited on Thu Mar-04-04 10:34 AM by Zolok

Top ten things I like about Superman:

10.)He can kick the Incredible Hulk's @ss...CGI or Ferrigno, it makes no diff to Kal El.
9.) Kirk Alyn
8.) George Reeves
7.) Chris Reeve
6.) Lois Lane, shrill, co-dependent, impulsive...what is not to love?
5.) Curt Swan
4.) Jimmy Olsen, prototype for a modern archetype, famous for knowing someone famous...
3.) Clark Kent...you just KNOW he voted for Hubert Humphrey!
2.) Treats all fellow heroes with friendliness...all that power and he has a democratic disposition.
1.)Red cape, red trunks, blue tights, art-deco S icon and all-man!
:)

1. Superman is dead.
Sad but true. Learn to accept it and move on. That's the way he would have wanted us to behave.

21. Killed in 1992 in DC Comics.
Was a huge thing. Supposedly was killed to never return. Made him so popular however, that he returned to comics in several different forms.

2. I always thought of Batman as the tragic figure. He lost his parents.
But if you think about it, Superman lost TWO sets of parents and his home planet as well. Tragic.

12. Nope
When they revamped Superman in...what was it? The eighties? John Byrne brought back the Clarks. Both of them. Ma and Pa Clark are still around to this day.

3. Secret Identity
I think Superman's need to have a secret identity shows internal conflicts, the effect of repression. If he's really a super guy, he ought to let it all hang out, so to speak.

Other questions - about his clothing. Who does his laundry? Do his capes need spotting?

4. How can Superman get a haircut? Or shave?
Wouldn't his superhair and superwhiskers defeat any attempts by scissors or razors?

Terry...with WAY too much time on his hands.

:-)

7. He uses his heat vision and a small mirror to shave.
Shown in comics already (early in the John Byrne run, IIRC)

13. I loved that bit, and the bit just after
when Supes peers through Batman's cowl and Batman says "you peeked"

The next scene is Supes discovering the bat tracker on his cape and looking out the window to see Batman waving at him from a couple of buildings away.

That's one of the best American cartoons ever.

14. I think it I was one of the best cartoons ever in the World
Honestly I cannot stand anime. It is pure crap. They couldn't animate their way out of a wet paper sack. I live with an animator. I know how hard it is to do convincingly.

Japanese animation is too detailed graphically to animate well. You either have a very detailed character flying (without moving any body parts) through the air with speed lines to simulate movement, or a guy talking where his mouth is moving but nothing else.

I've never understood the fascination with Anime. I think it is poor quality. The best animators in the world were Disney's Seven Old Men. They were responsible for the greatest animated films ever made. They imbued characters with life and spirit.

The guys over at Pixar are the only other ones that are really getting it right.

16. you should check out some recent titles like
Edited on Thu Mar-04-04 12:13 PM by BigMcLargehuge
Series:

Last Exile
Ghost in the Shell (I forget the rest of the series title)
Cowby Bebop

Films:

Akira
Ghost in the shell
Anything by Myazaki's Studio Ghibli

their animation can be incredible.

Ghibli's traditional cell animation is better than anything Disney has ever done. And Gonzo Studio's Digimation blends fantastic cell animation with excellent CGI.

I've seen them all. All of these a the best of what Japanimation has to offer and still they aren't that good. They cannot move characters convincingly. They do not emote. They do not live.

The point of animation is to make drawings come alive. Anime does not accomplish this task. They are flat and lifeless with no spirit.

19. fair enough...
I will admit that living with a professional animator (my hubby works on Jimmy Neutron) has skewed my opinion of all animation. He is able to point out glitches in even the best animation.

20. I review anime for a website magazine
so I am exposed to a hell of a lot of it and I think the speed at which those series are created, and the thought that goes into the majority of good ones, and the skill with which many of them are animated (still hand drawn in many cases) forgives animation glitches.

I see glitches in Disney stuff too... but comparing Pixar's Finding Nemo (for example) who has two years and 50 million bucks to develop and create the film versus three months and half a mil for a series like Last Exile is akin to comparing apples to oranges.
