Need help posting new avatar

I stuck by my guns advocating for the impeachment of the bush-monster to the bitter end. I think it's time to replace my avatar with one more appropriate. Whenever I have tried to post an avatar outside of those offered by the DU, I get confounded. This of course confirms the fact that I am not quite as smart as a 5th Grader but a bit better off intellectually than Sarah Palin! I am partial to the dancing Chicken Little above so can someone please take pity on me show me how to change avatars.

1. Click on "Options" at the top.

Then click on "Edit your profile" on the left.

2. Yes, been there done that but....

I am doing something wrong because I can't seem to make it work. Here is what I am doing:
I right click on dancing Chicken Little avatar...copy address for it. I go to 'Edit your profile', I remove 'Impeach Bush' avatar then I paste the new avatar in the box. The result is:

"ERROR: There were errors. Please correct them below:

Invalid avatar image"

Obviously I am doing something wrong but I don't know what. btw: Thank you for responding to my call for help. Perhaps you may know what I am doing wrong.

3. The image is too large.

According to the uploader the requirements:

(maximum size = 3 KBytes, recommended dimensions 48x48 pixels)

...and I was quite fond of that avatar! Thanks for finding my problem, maybe I can find a stationary version of this one.

5. This is the best I can do.

I took your original animation, picked out one of the frames and saved that as a static image. Then scaled that down to 48 x 48.

Apparently requirements are 3kb max, 48x48 recommended size.

Here's a 65x65 static (bigger than recommended but it might work).

I think it's OK but not as recognisable as the original 100x100.

To get the animation down to 3kb needs more effort. Resizing to 48x48 helps but that brings it down to 7k. I'm still learning GIMP (trying to become Microsoft Windows free here!) so I've yet to figure out if it can reduce the colours down automatically (number of colours - more = bigger file) and that might help. Dropping the number of frames might help too.

Here's just shrinking the animation down: but that's 6-7k...

If someone can figure out how to reduce the number of colours and rip out a couple of layers then I think we might make it work.

I tried the smallest stationary one but once again I was unsuccessful. It is late for me as well, perhaps tomorrow I can figure something out that will work from these you created for me. Thanks again mwooldri.
c
