I'm making vegan muffins tonight for a school bake sale.
We're raising money for Free the Children.

Now, should I tell people they're vegan or not? I figure, if I don't, we might sell more, as some high school kids might be all "eww, soy."

1. I'd say do it, because some people will be pleased to see that they ARE vegan. As someone with a
food allergy, I'm happy when people label their baked goods.

2. Most folks don't even know what "vegan" means.
Although, I can't really qualify that as far as the under 20-ish crowd goes. They're a lot smarter than most adults I know.

Why'd you go with vegan ones?

This is the DU member formerly known as lightningandsnow's kick-ass vegan muffins.

3. I don't know about vegan, but I'd definitely label them soy.
People can have serious allergies to soy, after all.

6. I'm not even sure if there's soy in the ones I plan to make...
It's just that people usually associate veganism with tofu. :P

8. Say so. I made stuff for Bake Sale For Democracy back in '04, and it was really well recieved

As in, while I was still dropping it all off, somebody paid $20 for once slice of banana bread.

It makes teh vegans happy, but it'll also help out people with common allergies like dairy or eggs. And you'll want to let anybody with soy allergies know that they should get something else, if you're using soy milk or something like that.

Now the important question is: which cookbook did you get?

edit: and now that I think of it, at our fundraiser at school a few months back, we ran out of the vegan cookies first. Though that was college students. But I think people like the idea of something different, or are curious.

14. Yes. I made a big pot of vegan chili for a scooter rally the past couple of years
and let people know - plus there was soy in it. I will say it went over really well, even among my mostly carnivorous friends.
