How much do you pay for vehicle registration?
I renewed mine yesterday — $122. That's almost twice what it was only about five years ago.

2. I paid a tad over $90 to register my car and switch the title from TX to WA.
WA used to be very expensive, but I believe the fees were significantly reduced by legislation several years ago.

every year. Mine's coming up next month along with the inspection, so tack on another $40 or so. Plus, my 3000 mile checkup is due.

So, my little 2004 blue Honda Civic is gonna make me pay in February! :P
But I love it! (should have named it Oliver. :P)

6. My renewal is sitting right here on my desk.
$30.72 this time. Benefits of driving a 16-year-old vehicle. It keeps running well and the registration fee drops every year.

16. Hey, lizzie!
My license is tied to my birthday, but not the registration. Just renews on the anniversary of the first registration. And for the license, I don't need a new one until 2013 -- and my current photo already looks like it was taken of me in college. They're not going to believe I'm the same guy when I finally go get the new one.

$98 doesn't sound too bad for two cars. I know newer cars cost more everywhere, but I haven't driven a new car since 1993, so anything more than about $50 seems like a lot.

20. In Ohio, registration is tied to the primary owner's birthday
I've renewed cars in Ohio for 15 years now. I don't renew my license until next year. Hopefully I'll be settled somewhere by then.

Ohio is a flat-rate for auto registrations. When I lived in Mississippi, it was tied to value. I paid almost $500 to register a new Honda Accord in 1993. No wonder many don't drive nice cars there. No one can afford to put plates on them. My sister said they do it the same way in Oklahoma. x(

22. I've heard a lot of people complain about Colorado's high registration cost.
They must be buying new cars all the time, cause I just don't see it.

27. They stopped charging
property tax upon registration in Oklahoma several years ago. They were still doing it when I got down here 11 years ago and I had to pay a bundle but now it's $85 for my car, a little less for the truck.

But, yeah...Ohio was tons cheaper.

they should waive any registration. So says me.

24. I dunno. It's something like $20 if you walk in: & they charge a dollar extra to do it by mail. But
there's a catch: you can't register if you haven't paid the county property tax on the vehicle; that seems to depend on the blue book value, but it can be a few hundred bucks on a new car

25. NC: $28.00 for a standard issue plate.
Edited on Fri Jan-23-09 02:04 AM by mwooldri
I have a special plate - $35.00 for that ($25 goes to a charity), and I personalize it - extra $20.00 for that.

So $78.00 for me. My wife has a standard issue, $28.00 for her.

But then there's emissions... I think the max is $32 but I'm not too sure. I skipped emissions this year because I got a new vehicle pre-inspected just as my old vehicle was coming due (well someone ran into it at a red light and it got totalled).

Now there's property tax on top of that too... that goes to the county, extra if you live in a city that taxes property (small "cities" like Sedalia, nope... Greensboro? Yep, just essentially double the county tax).

36. That's how the GOP raises revenue. They don't "raise taxes"
they create additional "user fees", until you're paying a freaking user fee on everything.

That's how MN's illustrious governor has done it for the past six years. And we're still facing a $5bil deficit for the next biennium.

31. well, this year
for my vehicle - 2001 Town & Country minivan (I have three in car seats still so I have to do the minivan thing) it was $55 to renew the registration for the year because I wanted the new agriculture plates. Then I had to pay $135.72 at the town office for my excise tax. My husband drives a '95 Subaru Legacy and he paid $96.02 to renew everything for the year (reg + excise tax).

something like $200 to renew my '06 Acura a couple of months ago here in CA. And that reflects the rollback Ahnold initiated when he took over. It would be much more if the fees were raised as he's proposed. (One of the reasons he occupies the Governor's office in Sacramento is those lower registration fees, which, ironically, he's now looking to raise as someone pointed out upthread.)
