2. He lives in Minnesota
He tried a semester here in his sophomore year and it was better for him to be back in MN, he did not make any friends...he did not really try, but that is another story.

19. I'm sorry he wasn't able to adjust. You are down in the OC
aren't you? My 15-yr-old daughter has lived here in a quiet Ventura County suburb all her life. She's also very introverted and has only a small group of friends. She out and out despises 99% of the kids at her school as fake, shallow, and mean. I'm a substitute teacher in the local district and I can't disagree with her. The SoCal suburbs can be brutal for teens.

At any rate, I hope your son is enjoying his special day and that you get to give him a belated birthday hug in person soon!

9. I did
We just had about the best phone conversation we have ever had.

We would have really good face to face talks once in awhile when he was here, but the phone thing has been difficult. He is painfully introverted.

10. awe--(of however you write that sound)
my daughter is at college and i asked her the other night "why is it that every time i call you or you call me you sound like you're bored or pissed off at having to talk to me?"

i get these flattened "hello.."

then i get a lot of one word answers and long pauses if i don't keep the conversation rolling.

of course, every once in awhile she cranks it up a few notches and talks as much as i do. we communicate better in person.

18. I'm 56. My parents are 86 and my dad still feels the
need to check up on me. One night I was driving my teenager and her friends home from an all day rock festival at 9:30 when my cell phone rang. It was my dad wanting to know where I was and why I wasn't home. When I remind him that I get mail from AARP, he goes silent. Doesn't want to hear about it. To him I'll always be a little girl.

14. Happy birthday to your baby. I hope the day
doesn't bring too much sadness for you. It's hard when our kids live so far away. My son is a 6.5 hour drive from here. He'll never stop being my baby.

23. Congrats, mamacita!
The drummer in my band's daughter just turned 18 a couple months ago, too. Raising a kid to that age is a huge accomplishment! I hope Mr KW takes you out for a nice dinner at a nice restaurant. Like Red Lobster. Or the Olive Garden.
