For me it's a tie between The Stranger, maybe that's because of Edward G. Robinson and The Magnificent Ambersons.

3. No Touch of Evil?

That might be my favorite. Though The Stranger is pure fucking genius, too, and Robinson - wow! - amazing in that movie.

But then, MacBeth is one of the more brilliant Shakespeare movies ever done, as well as one of the more brilliant movies at all.


And on the other hand, one has to give props to the utterly amazing Dial F For Fake.

5. i think that was the best role that Robinson ever played, when i was a kid he was

just the cartoon of a gangster on Looney toons but i've finally watched many of the movies he was in and have really come to appreciate his work.

Too bad Orson couldn't have lasted longer. The indie film boom that started with "Raising Arizona" in the late 80s would have helped him find a home for his projects

I've actually spoken to people who heard it live. Both said it was totally scary, and they both knew it was fake. Imagine the poor bastards who believed it.

I also loved Welles in the Dean Martin roasts.

Has so many relevant ideas to stuff that is happening constantly. Please read the book -it's completely prescient to stuff we discuss all the time:

The move from town center to suburbs

Real estate values

New technologies replacing old ones

Entrenched wealth vs new wealth

Stock hyperbole and lost fortunes from speculation

Safety in the workplace (Young Amberson blows up in the end in a mine explosion)


The movie does a great job of adhering to the book pretty closely.
