Just watched 'The Wrestler'
Edited on Sun Jan-25-09 03:36 AM by JCMach1
What a fantastic but incredibly depressing movie...

Mickey Rourke deserves the Oscar for this... I suspect he even did the steroids to 'feel' the part. What a good, subtle and unusual performance...

The whole film strikes me as a metaphor the good old U-S-A... i.e. we are the broke-down, narcissistic, washed-up, 1980's wrestler...

Anyone else seen it yet? What do you think?

Next on the Oscar viewing list: "The Reader"

1. I loved it.
Mickey Rourkes character seemed to mirror Jake the Snakes life and a little bit of Hulk Hogan (Hulk Hogan currently). But its a pretty common story in the wrestling world.

2. I just watched it today, too, plus I watched
Revolutionary Road and Doubt today. I never see the nominated movies before the actual Oscars so my husband and I decided to watch some on this long weekend (Chinese New Year so Monday off here in Korea).

Revolutionary Road I found even more depressing. Hit a little too close to home, I guess.

The Wrestler was good and I think Rourke deserves an Oscar. Marisa Tomei was good but I didn't see Oscar. Maybe it's just me.

3. For Tomei, maybe best dancing in a film...

Actually both of these roles were unusual in that they had heavy physicality demands. Screw one thing up and it looks fake (remember Demi Moore as a stripper?)

I don't think this is Tomei's year or role... but damn she was smokin' ... ummmmm if only men voted she might win...
