I was a co-writer on an HBO movie script, and spent some time on the set since the director is a friend of mine.

One of the things that consistently broke us up was his unfailing correction of anyone who addressed him as "Mr. Kingsley" or, worse, "Ben."

He also went out of his way to introduce his young, young, young, very beautiful, very dumb wife as "Lady Kingsley."

Sir Ben and Lady Kingsley broke up not very long after that, as I recall.

we work with are sort of alive. Not necessarily sentient, but breathing.

You folks deal with the dead, which, I must admit, I sometimes envy.

On the other hand, I was once on the set of "Miami Vice," (remember that show?), watching a script I'd worked on being filmed. It was one in which my writing partner and I were cuter than hell with the character names, dropping in loathed ex-husbands and naming one after a raging lunatic of a poodle owned by a mutual friend. Of course, we had to name the hooker who got beaten to death by her pimp after me.

So, I'm standing there, watching the scene with one of the producers, and I said, "Look at that - I've gone from being a white lawyer to being a black prostitute."

To which the producer said, "Good career move."
