Replacing soda with water is no fun!
Now that I've been banned from soda (I was easily a 6-8 cans a day diet sprite or coke drinker) I am constantly thirsty - and the doc said water is the way to go.

It just ISN'T the same. Water tastes like ass, no matter how much you purify it.

No bubbles, no flavor - this sucks!

1. What is it about soda that made it a no-no for you?

8. My stomach blew up
Well, not really - I just degraded the lining too much by soda, advil, ale, coffee, alleve and other bad things

The doc said - do you want a beer a night, or soda?

Being a human being, I opted for the beer

10. Can the lining rebuild itself? is this a temporary measure?

12. Did you know there are topical asprin and ibuprophen creams
that will bypass the stomach? That might help your condition, in the future.

Or some other drug store?

14. I am not sure how many are available at your local stores
The asprin ones used to be. Not sure about the Ibuprophen ones (although those are readily available online). I know a pretty good overseas pharmacy (where I get my allergy meds) if you need one.

21. one of them is Pennsaid
That's what it is called here in Canada; it is diclofenac, an NSAID that they usually prescribe for arthritis. It's in an oily base. Works okay but you have to apply it about 4 times a day and I never can manage that. The liquid version is sold by prescription here, probably in U.S. as well.

Yeah I think you will be able to go back to soda. The aspirin and ibuprofen are the main culprits probably. Did he suggest one of those acid reducing drugs, a proton pump inhibitor? I take Prevacid and drink a couple of diet sodas a day and eat whatever I want. However if I stop taking them in about two days the symptoms come right back. I'm told I still have a a little gastritis and esophagitis but I do not feel it and and I don't care, though probably I should. I really resist the chipping away of life's small pleasures one after another in pursuit of a better life. There's a limit to the amount of "improvement" I can take.

7. I'm in the same boat, though I still drink soda.
I didn't drink that nasty ass diet soda either. It's the sugar addiction I think. It's probably worse than nicotine addiction if you've been drinking long enough. Just gotta tough it out.

20. Well everytime you smell a fart, you are tasting ass
When someone farts, they let loose small particles - let's call them 'farticles.' When you smell them, you taste ass, essentially.

There's your TMI story for the day :)

18. Add a small amount of fruit juice
At home, drink the water with ice and a sprig of fresh mint.

I like drinking water as is but sometimes for a change I'll add a squeeze of lemon or lime (probably too acidic for you right now) or a shot of whatever fruit juice I have on hand.

19. I stopped drinking soda cold-turkey several years ago. You'll get used to it.
Can your stomach handle a little lemon or lime wedge with the water? That might help. I will enjoy a Mexican Coke once in a great while, but I'm pretty much strictly a water and tea drinker now (and coffee, of course).

Speaking of, can you have iced tea? That might be another alternative for you if you don't like water.

26. Ha! Try replacing bourbon with water!
I sip on a bottle of water all evening now, instead of multiple bourbon & cokes ...

The water is probably better for me, but I don't get the same buzz.

29. You'll get over it
When I went on massive doses of lithium a little over a year ago, I started chugging at least a gallon of water a day. I've never been a huge fan of tap water, but I got used to drinking it after I was drinking bottled water at $1.50 for 20oz. from the machine at work.

Pretty soon you don't even realize your drinking tap water, and you dislike the taste of soda (especially diet).

You get used to it. I still don't drink much else. I bought a water cooler for my kitchen and fill it with water from an artesian spring.

33. Try a Pur water filter pitcher.
The most recent data I've read say that Pur does a better job than Brita in getting the extra crap out. Anyhow, it leaves the water pleasantly clean and almost sweet. (We've got pretty good water here to begin with.) Keep the pitcher in the fridge and drink the water cold. Tastes even better.

34. 6-8 cans a day?!?!?!
No wonder you had stomach problems!

That is putting way too many chemicals in your body, too.

You'll feel 100% better when you kick that habit.

35. Try spring water...
Edited on Mon Jan-26-09 04:01 PM by gmoney
We used to get "drinking water" delivered to our office and it tasted basically like the tap water it is... then I changed services and switched to spring water. It does taste a lot "crisper" and clean and is more enjoyable. Also helps to have it really really cold, and maybe get one of those aluminum bottles for drinking from instead of a paper cup or plastic bottle.

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0012AL5YC/amzng-20/

Good luck!

Also, avoid "distilled" water, as it's unhealthy to drink in large quantities... it can leach the minerals from your system. Spring water does have naturally occurring minerals which gives it some sort of flavor. Overpurified water tends to taste flat and awful...
