Last week or so I posted about a sense I had that there was a Beatles resurgence afoot. I say "sense" b/c it was hard to determine how much of it was me and how much of it was real, i.e. out in the culture. It seemed like I was hearing more Beatles tunes--and lesser knowns--on various stations, but was it just me noticing b/c my interest was picking up?
I'm 51 and own precisely one Beatles CD: Let It Be (Naked). Owned two on vinyl: Rubber Soul and Abbey Road. The point is I'm not that big a fan and never have been, not because I don't like them, but b/c if you are a certain age you've heard pretty much their whole catalog and there's nothing left to "discover."
But I figured it out this weekend, I think. Shopping w/ Ms. D, I saw peace sign Ts for little girls, op-art handbags, and even some seeming protest-chic in-store displays. In short, kind of a 60s thing. OK, things cycle. But then it hit me. The cycle has been pushed by Obama.
The Obama moment and spirit and family has reminded the county--and boomers--of Kennedy, I think. There is an uplifting focus of concentration that some will call inspiring, detractors "mania." I'm thinking it creates a subconscious connection with the Beatles moment as well. Program managers, DJs, advertising execs, etc. (At least this must have been subconscious *w/ me* b/c I couldn't articulate it until this weekend.)
So there you have it. People are nostalgic for a promising future.
Sorry if this is pop culture conventional wisdom....
