If you know where it is on DU and you have a link to it, please post it. If not, that's okay, just describe it.

Mine would probably be AngryWhiteDemocrat announcing that he would run for Congress.

2. I have no idea where it is but
there were two very interesting threads discussing Margaret Atwoods "A Handmaids Tale" on DU1 a long time ago. I had it book marked on DU1 but alas, it didn't make it across the great divide

so it goes

3. I remember ROTFALOL over the thread on Laura Bush's clothes.
The posts just got funnier and funnier, but I think my favorite was: "It's a cry for help."

6. I was going to vote for Dagmarks thread...
about starting another group on DU for feminists. Unfortunately the thread was not only locked but has disappeared. For shame Skinner. I'll probably be punished for this post but that was really heavy handed.

It's out there in plain sight.

But then - this thread isn't really about sharing complaints - now is it?

I'm not trying to be lazy about this but I can't find the thread. I'd appreciate it if you would post a link.

I'm not going to post a link to it though because complaints are not what this thread is about. I'm not going to help you hijack this thread.

Even though I know that would go against your upstanding priniciple.
From what I can see the entire post has been deleted.

8. Not a post - an experience...
I lurked.. then started posted... then started contributing to the forum that brought me to DU as a lurker.. LBN

For awhile there was a huge news link service that combined sources from all over the world in about 100 topic areas. Because these bushco is so energy dependent - I started seeking and posting 'interesting' energy posts.

Someone (Gloria?) posted a Vheadlines story about a strike in Venezuela.

I knew from my other perusals that we were starting to cook something in Iraq (this was Feb/March 2002) and some OPEC nations were making noise back in response - thus making Venezuela's oil, that much more important.

So from my regular sources for about a week or two I would post, once a day, something on that front from Venezuela. Usually after two or three responses it would die.

One day I was wondering if I should bother. So along with the news item (the strike was spreading) I posted a note in blue -stating the reasons why I thought this was a story to follow - that it could be VERy significant, but that if no one was interested I wouldn't keep it up.

Then Proud Patriot tagged on - she had been followng and found it interesting but didn't know much.

Then several other people tagged on. Then a DUer brought in four articles about the Chavez adminstration - two pro, two con. We started discussing.

The thread grew - lasted several days (things didn't go quite as fast in LBN in those days). An anti Chavez poster (legitimate) came on and gave counter arguments - it got lively.

Then... while DU was suddenly watching stories - within a week or two - the attempted Coup happened.

I like to think outside of folks tied to Venezuela, and academic departments or think tanks with a focus on that region - DU was probably one of the most skeptical and well informed places to analyze what was being said by our administration as the story unfolded.

But we wouldn't have had so many people with some basic understanding with out those precursor conversations.

Without Gloria posting a story very intriguing (said Chavez govt sources accused bush related people to a whisper assasination campaign (as in never confirmed)... to my getting boldenough to link stories (that few ever read)... to in a moment of frustration stating why I was posting the stories (and offering to not) - in terms of potential relevance due to our posturing in Iraq and midEast Posturing in resposne.... to an incredible minds on conversation lasting days (people educating themselves)... to being poised to consume and incredible international news story as it unfolded.

I am so pleased to have participated in that story. It is one that will probably stay with me forever as an example of what an incredible place this is.

11. Early in the war
I know, I should not make light of the war, but this was good. There was a bombing attack going on and someone posted a thread in LBN to the effect of "CNN HAS LOST THEIR NETWORK FEED FROM BAGDAD!!!" Someone posts: "Well I guess they got that weapon of mass destruction they were looking for..."

12. another one
This was during all the hoopla over protesting France and people were changing the name of fries and toast to freedom fries and freedom toast. There was a discussion started about a huge anti-war demonstration in London, England and how only a small percentage of the English public was supporting US policy. A poster goes (I think his handle was Jimbo'sShoes) "uh-oh, does this mean we have to change the name of our language to 'freedomlish'?" I thought that was funny

17. "The Cow Whisperer" from August 2001
"What kind of car do you drive"

I tried to find the links in the gallery...and between the Pinot Noir, and missing Michael....it made me sad to see some of the "old DU" names:

Olaf the White
Couchpatater
Sffreeways
Capurr
Pato something

There are tons of others...but, my God...I miss the "old" DU.

The newer people are cool; but, I have never liked DU as much as I used to.

And where the HELL is Denise????? Rox, I know you are here..but, this is just ridiculous.

19. I think Olaf passed away
:(..

I recall him posting about brain surgery he was due to have, and then we never heard from him again:(

sffreeways moved and then her son was killed, so she is probably not much in the mood to be here, just yet..

Pato is a busy guy.. he's in college and ran for office, so he's probably out campaigniing for someone or maybe running the campaign :)

cappurr stops in from time to time..

But you are right, there are lots of folks who have passed thru here and we don't get to see anymore..:(

Maybe they are lurkers now because they are all so busy, or maybe they are just waiting til it gets closer to the elections :)

20. Hi SoCal!
I know...I remember the post about the brain surgery...and then he just never came back.

He was a great guy, no doubt about it.

I have seen and exchanged PM's with Capurr....I just miss her.

There are just so many that are gone from DU....Remember EarlG's posts about fantasy soccer?

I think there are so many here now that I cannot keep up-

21. and things do move fast now...
I guess it was bound to happen as we grew, but sheeez.. I go take a nap and have to go to page 6 or 7 to see posts I read before my nap ..

and with the new contents listing, these tired old eyes cannot even tell if it's one I posted to or just read.. I usually just hit mark and start over..

so if some of you thought I was ignoring your responses to me..I'm not.. It's just harder to navigate the new DU :(
