Pittsburgh and Arizona - what foods are associated with these two locales?
As long as it's edible we may make some theme food. I've already been told, no sausages/brats. :eyes:

2. For Arizona as a whole, I'd say Navajo Tacos
...or possibly just Fry Bread.

For Phoenix in particular, McDonald's, Whataburger, Jack In The Box, Burger King, Chili's, Coco's...:eyes: :boring:

11. Good call on the Navajo Tacos
A recipe for Navajo Tacos:

Navajo Fry Bread

4-5 cups flour
3 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup instant milk
2 cups water

Filling

1 1/2 lbs ground beef
1 onion, chopped
3/4 teaspoon garlic salt
1 can pinto beans

Suggested Toppings

grated cheese
salsa
lettuce
tomato
onion
sour cream
green onion (whatever sounds good)

Directions:

To make fry bread: Mix dry ingredients.

Stir in water.

Knead dough lightly; cover and let rest 15 minutes.

Heat 1" vegetable oil in a 10" skillet.

Pinch off dough in small amounts and pat dough into thin 8" circles.

In the hot oil, quickly brown on both sides.

Drain on paper towels.

To make filling: Brown ground beef and onion, drain.

Add beans and garlic salt.

Simmer 10- 15 minutes.

To Serve: Spoon filling onto frybread.

Top with grated cheeses, salsa, lettuce, onion, or whatever sounds good.

7. I'd love to make halushki
but I tried once and it was EPIC FAIL on a massive scale. I was told it was because I didn't have the special pan with the holes in it. It also didn't help that I substituted kielbasa for bacon.

5. They were touting Iron City Beer on "Today" this morning
and a quick google came up with "Turkey Devonshire"

"The original Devonshire is composed of crisp bacon and slices of turkey placed on a single piece of toast and then covered with a rich creamy cheese sauce. It should be served bubbling hot from the oven."

Sounds different.

8. Here's my guacamole recipe
Edited on Fri Jan-30-09 07:49 PM by begin_within
And I live in "the big avocado" (San Diego County) so you can trust me that it's killer. You will need ripe Hass avocadoes, though they may be difficult to procure at this time of year. Probably the only Hass avocadoes you can get right now will be imported from Chile. They must be already ripe to the point where the outer skin is black by today, so that they will be soft by Sunday. If they are still green today, they will not be ripe enough by Sunday. Anyway,

1/4 teaspoon salt
1 lime
1 large or 2 small cloves garlic
1/4 cup green taco sauce - not red
4 large Haas avocados, very ripe
Fresh tortilla chips

Use only Hass avocados - do not use Fuerte, Bacon or Zutano avocados. Pinkerton avocados are acceptable if Hass are not available, but the results are best by far with Hass. When fully ripe, the avocados will be completely black on the outside, and soft but not squishy.

Squeeze juice from the lime into a bowl. Cut the squeezed lime peel in a few pieces, and drop into the lime juice. Add salt and mash lime peel down. Allow to sit for a few minutes to let the lime oil come out of the peel. Then discard the lime peel.

Use only fresh garlic. Mash the garlic with a garlic press, then add to lime juice mixture. Add the green taco sauce. A can of diced mild green chiles can be substituted for the taco sauce. Use a stronger taco sauce if you want it more spicy, but do not use red taco sauce or red chilis, as they will ruin the bright green color of the guacamole. Stir mixture until thoroughly mixed.

Cut avocados in half and remove pits. If there is any brown flesh on the inside, cut that away. The green areas in the same avocado is still perfectly usable. Using a knife, dice the avocado flesh while still in the shell, then scoop out with spoon and into the lime juice mixture.

Add diced avocado to the mixture, and stir just until it blends in. It should still have hundreds of tiny chunks of avocado throughout, it should not be a completely smooth paste. If you are a salt fiend, taste the guacamole and if it is not salty enough for you, add 1/4 teaspoon more salt. But the tortilla chips will also supply salt. Do not add cumin or any other seasonings. Do not add tomatoes!

Cover tightly and refrigerate for one hour. Serve within 4 hours of making it - it will only last one day. Serve with the freshest tortilla chips you can get - go to a Mexican bakery if possible. This recipe never fails - set it down at a party and watch it vanish within minutes.

30. And teaching where I do...
The kids' grandmas make it all the time -- I'm so lucky!

On a sadder note -- Costco hasn't had peach pie for ages. They should be having cherry pretty soon, they usually do this time of year. (For Washington's BD? Interesting coincidence.) But it's been apple (I think theirs is too sweet) and maybe pecan (which goes right to my butt). So disappointing.

Hope all is well in Zomby land. :hi:
