How the hell does a father not know when his kid's birthday is?

My daughter turned 18 today :-)
Her father and I have been divorced since the late 90's, he lives in another country now so he is not involved in her day to day life...she and I went out to dinner and she tells me "you know he always calls me the day AFTER my birthday, right?? I really think that HE thinks my birthday is the 31st. I'm gonna be really pissed if he calls tomorrow..the day after..again". She looked at her cell phone clock and decided that it was already 8:30 his time, there would be no phone call tonight.

He and I don't talk so me calling him and giving him a heads up is not an option mainly because the way that he is, he will tell HER "your mom called and told me your birthday is today" and then she will get some sort of lecture (any excuse for a lecture).


On the bright side, we went out and had a really good time at dinner and now she is off to be with her friends to celebrate with them and spend the night at her girlfriend's. I'm getting her a multi-massage package and a gift certificate for Glamour Shots for her birthday.

How the hell did I become the mom of an 18 year (and a 21 year old!!)??

1. My dad was convinced for years my birthday is June 10.

He was a week off. It's the 17th. He was getting me confused with my mom. Her birthday is the 10th of a different month.
