I have electricity for the first time since Tuesday! (Ice storm photos from Arkansas)
Edited on Sat Jan-31-09 10:04 AM by Cannikin
I'm in Springdale, one of the hardest hit areas of the state. I lost power Tuesday just after 1pm. It came back last night around 9:30. The power companies have done a superb job getting everyone restored as quickly as possible. Me, the S.O. and my dog have been 'camping' with propane heat and lots of grilled meat (I'm dying for a carb!). It has been very surreal. Neighbors wandering the streets looking at the damage. It reminds me of any number of post-nuclear war movies. (for BSG fans) On Wednesday morning it was very reminiscent of the scene with Roslin's dispassionate "Earth..." statement at the end of season 4.0.

Here are a few of my choice photos. The other 200 broken tree pics can be viewed at my photobucket album (link at bottom):

A view down my street

Ice storms are a strange mix of destruction and beauty.

After over 24 hours of non stop freezing rain, the ground was a solid slab that was difficult to walk on because of the knobby frozen grass.

Some of my neighbors were not as fortunate as us. We have no property damage.

2. That's amazing!
I have a relative in Mountain Home who says the ice broke off the tops of a whole bunch of their oak trees. It's been really cold here, but I guess I'd rather have that than ice.

4. That looks brutal
We've had a few bad ones up here recently (last one in December), they're pretty destructive. GREAT pics! Those trees all look severely damaged...

7. Went through one years ago in Joplin
Glad you got your power back. Your photos are beautiful. I used to live in NW Arkansas in the 70's and bought a beautiful willow chair and table from an elderly man who used to sell them right on 71 between Bentonville and Fayetteville (I worked at KKEG Radio back in the day).

When I lived in Joplin, my whole block lost power and then it came back on, except for my house. Turns out a tree branch fell and hit my electric meter and cracked it. Took me almost another week to get the power company to come out and replace it. My heater was gas but without the electric fan it was worthless.

11. My dear Cannikin...
These are amazing pictures, and thank you for them!

I am so relieved you're OK, and no damage...

Too bad there's no easy way to underground the wires...

This damage could be avoided...

Stay safe, sweetie!

14. We had a storm like that in Chapel Hill several years ago.
When I saw a 100+ft tree go down in my back yard early in the am of the storm, I made a phone call that saved us. We were able to get a room at a hotel in town that had power (underground and run by the university). Power was out to our house for a week. It cost us a helluva lot of money to stay at the hotel, but I have no regrets. When we checked in, I heard the reservations person say they had 100 people on the waiting list.

Glad to hear you are ok. Living in a freezing house can be very dangerous.

look like a post apocalyptic world. And then when everything thing melts and spring arrives you'll have people driving around with chain saws from out of state offering to cut down trees. It was just devastating. Glad you got your power back.

22. Beautiful, terrifying pics!
You seem to be quite cheerful for a dude who just went a week without power. I tip my hat to you. We lost power for 11 days in Richmond after hurricane Isabelle and my mood was definitely foul. I even asked my husband who I had to blow at Virginia Power to get some air conditioning and I swear he was tempted to find out...
Your pictures are amazing!

25. Incredible pictures
The line "ice storms are a strange mix of destruction and beauty" sums it up totally.

I'm sorry to hear about the lost power, I wouldn't cope at all well with that.

Very glad that you're back and sorted.

27. I'm glad your power is back on
I knew NW Arkansas got hit harder, than SW Missouri...I'm glad you made it through. A few of my wife's coworkers, didn't fare that well, lots of trees vs. home fighting, and the tree's won....

We had a bad on in Jan of 07, we were without power for ten days, it was a doozy...I think during this one, NW Arkansas didn't get any ice at all.

Your photos are wonderful! We're hearing all about Paducah, KY here; but not much about the rest of the area affected by the storm. Thanks for posting them!

29. We had a similar storm several years ago in Fort Smith.
It amazed me that so many of the trees that I thought had irreparable damage managed to recover. They looked pretty forlorn for a couple of years, but eventually the new growth filled in the places where even large limbs were lost. I'm glad your house came through OK.
