Any Dazed and Confused fans out there?
I'm watching it right now. I just bought it yesterday, found it cheap for a few bucks at my grocery store.

The cast is great, so many young actors who went on to have excellent careers. Vastly entertaining. I do think the star of the whole move is the music. Great music from start too finish. Fun movie, I enjoy it every time I watch it.

1. Love it
I've lived in (or just outside of) Austin for the last 17 years, so it looks like home to me.

Mathew McConaughey is awesome in that role.

"That's what I love about these high school girls, man. I get older and they stay the same age."

Classic. :D

3. One of my favorites!
Edited on Sat Jan-31-09 10:36 AM by MorningGlow
Which means my age is showing--I was in middle school in '76, and everything about that movie looks remarkably familiar--especially the fashions! Denim jumpsuit--ewww! High-waisted pants with giant pockets on the outside--ewww!

Even though I grew up in the northeast, the end of the school year was often hot and stifling (although of course not as bad as Texas)--it was like attending school in an oven (before there was air conditioning in schools). So in those exterior shots on the school grounds I could just FEEL the heat radiating off the asphalt and feel the crunch of the dry grass underfoot.

Saw it at the theater with a friend who was the same age--we sat behind some teenagers. We laughed uproariously; they didn't. As the lights came up, one girl said to the others, "I don't get it."

:banghead:

7. I was still a teenager when it came out
But I "got it" immediately, lol. I'm a bit of an old soul. I identify with people about 20-25 years older than I am quite a bit. The music from that era is my favorite, the movies etc.

4. I always thought it was the underrated "Big Chill" of my generation
and at the same time thought, wow, didn't we have more to contribute to life than that? I am saying I like the movie, the stars, the story.

At the same time, it was no "Big Chill", in terms of popularity or message. I am at an age where technically I'm a "baby boomer" but at the very youngest end and really don't see that. I'm too old to be a Gen X'er. Kind of in a no man's land generation. Dazed and confused was my generation lol

Yeah the music is great.

5. I believe we're called the "baby busters"
I read a GenX book a while back (don't ask me which one) that labeled the mid '60s babies as baby busters. That's the generation that was so much smaller than the boomers that TPTB closed half the schools in a dead panic and wreaked untold havoc on our psyches.

8. I'm kind of stuck on the edge of
being an Xer and a Yer. I identify with but don't totally fall into either group. Technically, I'd be Gen X, I was born at the end of '74, so like you I'm at the end of that, so I get what you're saying. I haven't really seen The Big Chill, I did, but it's been so long I can't recall much of it. I need to go back and watch it. It's one of those things that is odd, because you'd think I would have watched it, lol.

I had the biggest crush on Jason London. Then I met Mr. AAL, who bears a little resemblance to him.

There are so many great moments in that movie. My two older cousins lived that movie. I was always jealous of them!

On edit: I guess it was Jason, not Jeremy. A case of twins who look almost too much alike! I wouldn't have kicked either of them out of bed for eating crackers. :)

11. I heard guys say stuff like that growing up
Blech! :puke:

One group of guys were notorious for the question, "Hey little girl! Are you 12?"

Being underage wasn't such a big deal in those days. We didn't know we were supposed to be offended or outraged. Makes me gag now.

12. As someone who went to high school in Texas during the late 70's....
I have to say, that Dazed is the most accurate depiction I've ever seen.

The only thing missing is the music of Led Zeppelin, which Linklater was denied the permission to use.

I wish Christin Hinojosa (Sabrina) was still in the biz. But, alas, she went on to better things.

Well, until I lost the DVD that is. I really want the Criterion release.

15. The opening credit sequence is just brilliant...
The bubbling intro of Aerosmith's Sweet Emotion under credits on black then just as the cymbal crashes, cut to the tricked out orange GTO slow riding through the school parking lot... just gives me chills for some reason.

Yeah, it's funny to see so many future big names in the various character roles throughout the movie. Still can't see Matthew McConoheyeyehe without thinking "Wooderson!"

The whole thing is just excellent start to finish...

38. Ben Affleck...
I kept hearing about people who were in this movie I missed, including Ben Affleck. When I watched it again I looked for him the entire movie and could not figure out which character he was. I was stunned when I read the credits and saw he was the bully! And Matthew was incredible as "creepy older guy."

I was in 5th grade in 1976, I think. In any case, I found everything, especially the clothing, to be very accurate. Not just modernized versions of what it should have looked like.

24. Graduated High School in 1978.
We pretty much lived that movie, and the entire time I watched it the first time I was thinking "Oh shit--I WAS that person!" I think maybe we drank and drugged a little bit more than they did. The cars were a bit more of a focus for us--but overall it really does sum up my high school experience extremely well.

I was talking about that opening sequence just the other day with my husband. Sweet Emotion came on when we were in the car and I was laughing about the that opening montage in Dazed and Confused. The only thing "wrong" about it for me was the car--it needed to be a Cutlass rather than "a goat."

37. You understand the mystique of The Cutlass!
You really need to hear the reverb in the room (almost like God's voice!) when you say "The Cutlass" because those cars were worthy of complete admiration. Only car I ever saw that would regularly beat the Cutlass that my guy drove, was a flat black Nova that we loved to hate. I'd give my left arm to have either car today!

That Cutlass had a decent sized backseat too. Left a few seed burns back there...

Had a friend, John Ham. Looked exactly like the Wooderson character. Oh, five, six years older than us. Drove a woody. In Pennsylvania, by God. We smoked alot and he turned us on to Bruce Springsteen. 1974. Anyway, took my Cutlass to college and a roommate totalled it. Could of killed him. I enjoyed growing up in the seventies. No regrets.
