Don't want to lay out any spoilers off the bat. The Harvey Pekar story. Not what I expected, but I enjoyed it. Wha'dja think?

once you get into the story and the characters, it is an excellent movie.
I recommend.

That actor had the mannerisms down. Of course, he had a great resource. Sure, I'll hijack my own thread! 'Crumb' was an engrossing documentary, I need to get a copy.

It's kind of haunting. One of the qualities of a truely good flick, I think-- you find yourself thinking about it for days afterwards. I wonder how accurate the R. Crumb character was?

8. Anybody know offhand how many "American Splendor" books Crumb drew? |
|
I'm willing to give Pekar the benefit of the doubt there... not sure how well aquainted they were.

early 50s would be my guess - probably through jazz record collecting. Remember the yardsale record hunting scenes in the beginning of Splendor?
I recall Crumb also having some huge collection jazz records too, in his film.

14. Yeah, you're right... |
|
That was Harvey's story, they had a mutual friend and met disc hunting at a garage sale. Had to be early or mid sixties, before Crumb went to SF...

9. My idea for the next film. |
|
Has anyone ever seen "Waking Life"? Its sort of animation enhanced video. I think it would be a neat effect to make it like a comic in the movie. That part with the the blue guy with the red eyes in jail reminded me of the feel of some of the American Splendor artists.

12. Can anyone explain that film to me? |
|
I love Bill Murry.
I was in Oahu at the time which is somewhat japanese.
Both my wife and I were waiting for the story to get going and it never happened. It's like the film passed right over our heads and we both thought it was terrible, boring, plotless and pointless. Noone I have talked to has been able to tell me anything good about it.
What was the deal with Lost in Translation? What did we all fail to understand?

15. You either "get it" or you don't |
|
It's not about car chases or sex or violence...it's about two disaffected people in a foreign country who take an interest in one another where their current s.o.'s do not. I loved that flick I'm going to buy it. In all fairness, if you married your high school sweetheart and have never been in a relationship where you felt undervalued, you probably won't get it.

16. Finally saw Lost in Translation last night, oddly enough... |
|
Not bad at all. Sofia Coppola's coming along... reminded me of a French film. I really liked that one.
