1. Kick for anyone who has never seen it.
It's a good 'un. :)

I love the episode where the wife kills her husband with the frozen leg of lamb, then serves it to the police.

3. There was an Alfred Hitchcock / Twilight Zone episode...don't remember which...
...but the husband is up on the roof and the wife follows him up, telling him that if he comes down she will make him some potato pancakes. He tells her "YOU'RE a potato pancake, Ethel," and tosses her off the roof.

Domestic violence was a mainstay of early 60s TV, that's for sure.

5. Wow...that's harsh.
I don't remember that one at all. Dayum. :scared:

This is true. My friend and I talked about this years and years ago. Even when it's not actually shown there's a subtle undercurrent in a lot of them, sometimes shows you might not expect it from either.

Smoking is another thing that cracks me up in old shows. I watching an old episode of Kojak (hey, I love it...sue me lol) and there was a patient in the hospital smoking. Someone even gave him a light. In the movie King Kong vs Godzilla they give the natives on Kong's island cigarettes when they greet them. When a little native kid tugs on their sleeve and makes a motion like smoking a cig, they remember they forgot candy...and then give the kid two smokes.

One of the joys of adulthood was collecting Twilight Zone episodes on DVD that I remembered as a kid...I'd have a vivid memory of some section of the plot and that was it, just detective work and reading box covers until I found them.

I grew up in a Twilight Zone / Outer Limits / Alfred Hitchcock household...a few T.Z. DVD faves:

The Twilight Zone Volume 2

Includes the INFAMOUS William Shatner episode "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet" plus "The Monsters are Due on Maple Street" and "Time Enough at Last"...

Episodes: "Time Enough at Last" (Ep. 8, November 20, 1959) - A bookworm (Burgess Meredith) yearns for more time to read--then a nuclear holocaust leaves him alone in the world with lots of time, plenty to read, and one ironic twist! "The Monsters are Due on Maple Street" (Ep. 22, March 4, 1960) - Inexplicable events cause the residents of quiet Maple Street to erupt into rioting. The residents suspect an alien invasion has occurred. If so, where are the alien monsters? "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet" (Ep. 123, October 11, 1963) - A salesman (William Shatner) recovering from a nervous breakdown spots a gremlin on the wing of his plane. When he attempts to alert the others, his nightmare truly begins! "The Odyssey of Flight 33" (Ep. 54, February 24, 1961) - Flight 33 picks up a peculiar tailwind and is blown off course. After apparently correcting the problem, the flight arrives at its destination--a billion years ahead of schedule!

The Twilight Zone Volume 8

Includes "To Serve Man!"

Episodes: "Third from the Sun" (Ep. 14, January 8, 1960) - With all-out nuclear war about to ignite, William Sturka (Fritz Weaver) and a friend steal an experimental spaceship, load their families, and set out for an unknown planet. "The Shelter" (Ep. 68, September 29, 1961) - When a UFO invasion appears imminent, several suburban friends and neighbors are reduced to selfish, conniving animals in a fight over one family's bomb shelter. "To Serve Man" (Ep. 89, March 2, 1962) - The Kanamits, 9 foot tall aliens, arrive on Earth with one lofty goal: To Serve Man. They end war. They end famine. Theymake the military wonder: What's the catch? "The Fugitive" (Ep. 90, March 9, 1962) - Old Ben is a fugitive from outer space with a heart of gold. He risks it all to help a crippled little girl--without fear that alien pursuers from his home planet will find him!

The Twilight Zone Volume 8

One of the best all-around T.Z. DVDs, especially notable for the Roddy McDowell episode.

Episodes: "People Are Alike All Over" (Ep. 25, March 25, 1960) - When a space expedition crashes on Mars, passenger Sam Conrad (Roddy McDowall) is terrified when he encounters Martians. To his initial relief, they are human, extremely friendly and apparently just like us... "Valley of the Shadow" (Ep. 105, January 17, 1963, 50 min.) - Philip Redfield (Ed Nelson) finds himself trapped in a small town where people can reverse time and do many other amazing things. He is determined to escape and share the town's secrets with the outside world. "Black Leather Jackets" (Ep. 138, January 31, 1964) - Three tough-looking men on motorcycles disrupt a peaceful suburb when they move in. Yet the neighbors could never imagine just how dangerous these men are. One bit of advice: don't drink the water.

The Twilight Zone Volume 15

Notable for "A Kind of Stopwatch," which is a variant of the Burgess Meredith story in Volume 2 above...

And on edit: I just realized that "Escape Clause," the "Ethel, you are a potato pancake; you're as tasteless as a potato pancake" episode, is on here too!

Episodes: "Escape Clause" (Ep. 6, November 6, 1959) - A hypochondriac (David Wayne) exchanges his soul for immortality and indestructibility. When life soon becomes very boring, his unsuccessful attempts to find new thrills bring unexpected results. "Nervous Man in a Four Dollar Room" (Ep. 39, October 14, 1960) - Ordered to commit a murder he doesn't want to perform, a small-time hood nervously looks in the mirror and sees the man he could have been--confident, strong...and determined to get out. "The Midnight Sun" (Ep. 75, November 17, 1961) - The Earth's orbit has suddenly changed, drawing ever closer to the sun and promising eminent destruction. Or has it? Who really knows how the Earth may be doomed? "A Kind of Stopwatch" (Ep. 124, October 18, 1963) - The world's biggest bore and most avid talker gets a magical stopwatch that can stop everything except him. But when he misuses it, a wonderful conversation piece becomes a real party killer.

13. Cool trivia about the "20,000 Feet" episode...
John Lithgow did a remake of it for the Twilight Zone movie in 1983. 16 years later, Shatner was cast as The Big Giant Head on "3rd Rock from the Sun", starring Lithgow as Dick Solomon. Dialogue from that episode:

Sally Solomon: So how was your trip, sir?
The Big Giant Head: Horrifying, at first. I looked out the window and... I saw something on the side of the plane.
Dick Solomon: The same thing happened to me!

14. I remember that...
...a few years ago one of my local TV stations sandwiched "3rd Rock" reruns between Simpsons episodes (Simpsons-3rd Rock-Simpsons), 5 nights a week. I think I eventually got to see the whole series as a result.

6. I like the one where the woman murders her abusive husband
with a frozen leg of lamb; then invites all the detectives involved in solving the case to a nice lamb dinner.

10. Scariest one was the prisoner, trying to escape,
who allowed himself to be buried. First saw this when I was a kid with my mom and brother...scared the bejezzus out of all of us, and I swear led to a mild case claustrophobia. Won't give away the end, but DAMN!
