Groundhog Bites Mayor Bloomberg During Ceremony
Long Island's top groundhogs are at odds again -- Holtsville Hal saw his shadow Monday morning, Malverne Mel didn't -- so there was no consensus as to whether spring will arrive early or late.

They weren't the only furry forecasters to contradict each other.

The word out of Pennsylvania says Punxsutawney Phil, the world's most famous groundhog, saw his shadow, which traditionally means that the already long winter will last six more weeks. "Speaking" through Mayor Michael Bloomberg, New York City's Charles G. Hogg, known to friends as Chuck, saw "absolutely no shadow."

During the ceremony, Chuck bit the mayor, drawing blood when it "nicked his hand," Bloomberg spokesman Stu Loeser said. The mayor wrapped the cut with a napkin until he could check with his doctor. He was told there was no risk of rabies. The 2-year-old animal was born and raised in captivity and has had no interaction with other animals.
