7. Sorry, BB, I can't agree. I've been driving for almost 40 years, almost 2 million miles,

and have NEVER gotten a ticket or had an accident (except when people hit me when I was sitting still).

And the reason for that is that I understand that driving is an activity that needs to be taken seriously, and done with a clear head.

Fatal car crashes tend to happen at high speeds (this is obvious). Out of all of the distractions/inhibitors you've mentioned above, alcohol is the only one that tends to cause people to drive 40 or 50 miles over the speed limit and thus kill people in the process. Most of the drunk driving fatalities that I've hard of occurred when the driver was going 80 or 90 in a 30 MPH zone.

11. A morning radio personality (local) was going postal about Phelps this morning

I don't usually listen to morning radio--radio personalities yammering nonstop so early give me a headache--but I had to run an errand and I was cruising through the buttons on the car radio. Anyway, this radio personality was incensed--just LIVID--that Phelps would do such a thing. It was like she was taking it personally. Her reaction was really over the top. And this was a rock station, not even some conservative talk radio station!

The other person asked her why it bothered her, and she kept saying how it was a betrayal, especially to the companies he did endorsements for, and shameful that he got millions for his endorsements (her implication was that he was living the lie of pretending to be a wholesome athlete--like athleticism and pot smoking can't coexist). Her rant was so disconcerting to me that I switched stations pretty quickly.

I also don't understand why anybody cares what other people do. "An it harm none, do as thou wilt." Life's a lot easier when you're not stressing over other people's life choices, you know? :shrug:

Well, they yammer for hours on end each morning--no music breaks. After the morning show is over I think it's just classic schlock rock for the rest of the day. Not worth my time.

I'm getting the impression that the station/producers of the morning show have recently decided to position this member of the team (the female) as the "conservative voice" a la Blondie Bobblehead on The View. Against my better judgment I turned on that station for a few minutes when I was in the car this morning, and she was screeching about how everybody should be armed and that would solve the crime problem. (Discussion sparked by a local murder/suicide.) The other two personalities were presenting the usual counterarguments--countries like Canada and the UK have a low crime rate and nobody owns guns (she actually said, "Well this is America--it's different here--the Wild West, cowboys and indians." :eyes: ), and what if somebody got up in the middle of the night and blew away an innocent person on the sidewalk, etc. One of them reminded her of all the accidental shootings by hunters who mistake a friend for a deer, and she said, "Well, those people are just stupid."

I turned it off after that.

The funny thing is, she used to be normal. I think they're trying to get ratings by having these polar-opposite arguments every morning. It's not working for me, though--I just find it annoying and headache inducing. I won't be listening again.

My experience is that driving stoned is way way safer than driving drunk. When you're lubed up, your reactions are dulled & slowed down. That's a roadway disaster waiting to happen. When you're fried, you get paranoid and tend to over-react to potential road hazards. That can still cause problems, of course, but it's better to be high and hit the brakes half a block before the stop sign than juiced up and hit the brakes ten feet into the intersection.
