Another album I like: "After Bathing At Baxter's" by Jefferson Airplane

This one has really held up for me over the years, along with "Surrealistic Pillow". In contrast, "Crown Of Creation" by the same band now seems virtually unlistenable to me.

1. Damn STRAIGHT, Skippy!

"Surrealistic Pillow" is my favorite JA album, followed by "Baxters," and from there, we're cherry-picking.

Even the "worst" Airplane albums (Bark, Long John Silver) had songs of merit, but for my money, the two ALBUMS were ""Pillow" and "Baxter's."

CoC just seems flat; and "Volunteers" is cherry picking too.

But SP and ABAB are their best.

3. Was just in an on-line chat about Crown of Creation

yesterday. Did all 'yall hippies know that lyric was from that sci-fi novel The Chrysalids?

(The whole 6-finger baby thing--as has a character in the novel--started this off, I think)

The song "Crown of Creation" by Jefferson Airplane was inspired by the novel. Its title and lyrics are drawn from the text and plot with permission from Wyndham<2>. One example lifted almost verbatim from the text reflects a philosophical explanation by the Sealand woman: "But life is change, that is how it differs from rocks, change is its very nature." This line is rendered in the lyrics as "Life is change - How it differs from the rocks."

The immediately preceding lines of the song In loyalty to their kind / they cannot tolerate our minds. / In loyalty to our kind / we cannot tolerate their obstruction. are also taken from the book, from a monologue that asserts the inevitability of the conflict. The only difference is that book says that they cannot tolerate "our rise".

4. Love those two, but love Crown of Creation every bit as much

but then I like a lot of Volunteers and even a lot of Bark too ( but not nearly as much as those first three).

5. I like "Lather" from Crown of Creation

Other than that it's a big disappointment after "After Bathing at Baxter's", a true classic, perhaps THEE classic San Fransisco Psychedelic album...Like previous posts say, other than "Surrealistic Pillow" it's all cherry-picking...but I must admit I can't stand "Thirty Seconds Over Winterland"...
