this rant not available from your country
Edited on Tue Feb-03-09 05:25 AM by whirlygigspin
hiya, I need to rant, so here I am.

I'm feeling like the internet is being destroyed this week. Tinfoil hat? no. I just keep getting the message:

-this video is not available from your country- or

-this video is only available to UK residents

(that was from the BBC website)

I mean, FUCK! what is the point of having an internet if I can only hear the local POV?

This shit is really pissing me off, even youtube is doing this fucking nonsense.

I know the telecommunications companies are moaning about all the bandwidth and that's how they are trying to stop it, but GET REAL, most people are wasting bandwidth downloading porn, not the BBC's 'The Story of Maths' episode 1 Babylonian numbers!!!

Well, congratulations, assholes, I'm not listening to the BBC anymore. Are you happy?

I stopped downloading music years ago because of the fucking CD/record companies, I hope I don't have to give up the internet.

1. I can understand your rant - but the B.B.C. is a special case here
Because it is funded by a licence fee paid by all British television owners, they aren't allowed to spend that money on providing services outside of the U.K.

Certain foreign broadcasts are funded by the Foreign Office as a "benign" part of our foreign policy, and the others are run as commercial operations.

I think (though living in the U.K. haven't checked) that the radio stations are available streamed to the rest of the world, but the higher cost of providing streamed video caused to them to limit this to Britain (the licence fee payers).

2. part of it might also be
that there are different licensing agreements for different parts of the world - so for just about any entertainment show/movie, the company who holds the rights to distribute it in one area most likely does not have the rights to distribute it in most of the rest of the world.
