1. With jeans that tight, I'm amazed his willy didn't get deprived of nutrients and fall off.

2. I used to think he was just kind of okay...
Then I saw him perform live on Letterman years ago, and I was blown away.
It wasn't his singing as much as his energy. It was like this tidal wave of personality surged out of the TV...and this was on a crappy screen.

I doubt I'd ever buy a recording; but I'd love to see him perform a show.

5. He did a great version of Lenny Kravitz's "Are You Gonna Go My Way..."
...in "The Jerky Boys Movie." It would be interesting to read his thoughts on making that film...couldn't have been a career high point...but I liked it because I'm a fan of "so bad they're good" films.

35. You've GOTTA see "Year of the Horse"...
...it has a concert performance of "F*!#In' Up"...one of the highlights on the highlight-FILLED "Ragged Glory" album...

...and in the middle, Neil veers off into a weird spoken interlude.

(not an exact quote, but close)...

"Now, when I was a young boy, my dad said to me, "SON, HOW COME YOU ARE SUCH A F**K-up?"

It goes on for a few minutes. It's like Jack Kerouac (with a little bit of Henry Rollins thrown in for good measure) channeling himself through Neil Young. It's mesmerizing, disturbing, powerful.

Hard to explain the moment in a post like this one, but trust me...get "Year of the Horse." Bonus points for being directed by Jim Jarmusch.

"3 new from $6.68" on Amazon...go! Now! Thank me later!

16. major TJ fan here!
Edited on Tue Feb-03-09 09:38 PM by musette_sf
i mean, of course, if you're over a certain age, you know all the old hits. whether or not it's your style, you have to admit, the guy can SING and put a song over.

but the work he has done since his son started managing him has been incredible...

from working with Art Of Noise on Prince's "Kiss", to his kick-@ss version of "Lust For Life" with Chrissie Hynde, to just about every cut on his new album, "24 Hours", the last 20 years of his career is, to me, the best part of it.

"The Lead (And How To Swing It)", "Reload", and "Mr. Jones" were all worthy efforts. (the latter two only available via import)

"24 Hours" is such a great album, that it is inspirational. if he can do this at 68, it gives me heart to carry on. the album feels very 60s, in a very good way.

the first cut on "24 Hours" is a cover of an old Tommy James (and the Shondells) song, "I'm Alive". it didn't chart very high but it was on the radio in NYC at the time. it blew my mind to hear TJ do it!

also included is an excellent, sparse, striking cover of Springsteen's "The Hitter".

and there is a song by Bono, "Sugar Daddy", which IS the TJ swagger and mystique.

sorry to go on so long, but i dare you, listen to "24 Hours" and try to come away NOT a big fan!!!

and that's SIR Tom Jones to you!

And I am not ashamed to admit that I saw him perform in Vegas a few years ago. I've never seen so many middle-aged women going bat-shit crazy in my life.

Response: "There IS no downside."

21. He's right...
...really.

I'm sure that anything he had to do to "be" Tom Jones was more than worth it. There are "entertainers" galore, but he really did succeed in carving out his own, unmistakable corner of the world.

Edited on Tue Feb-03-09 11:42 PM by Corgigal
I couldn't believe how young the women were that were trying to get on the stage. A young woman, around 21 size 2, was pointing at him and dancin at him and he was just laughing and having a great time. Men if you can go, please check it out. Amazing the things you will see.
The women are still losing their minds and a good time was had by all.

Here he is singing Git me some, fun fun
