Can a dog hack up hairballs like cats do?
Edited on Tue Feb-03-09 09:22 PM by BeachBaby
I gave both my sons their haircuts tonight.

I sent each of them upstairs to get a shower, after I was done with them. I put all the hair-cutting gear away, and went upstairs to chat with them and tuck them in for the night. I couldn't have been upstairs for more than 20 minutes.

I come back downstairs with the vaccuum cleaner, ready to clean up all the hair. No hair - just my retarded golden retriever sitting in the middle of the floor, with hair stuck to her lip, while she licked her paws, coughing and hacking in between licks.

This could be a fun night. :eyes:

2. I imagine they might barf
But I don't think its like cats and hairballs. IIRC, they actually can get impacted colons if they get a large enough hairclump.
Bayleigh, Bayleigh, Bayleigh..:banghead:

3. She's such a dope, honest to God.
Seriously - why would she jump on the opportunity to chow down on a pile of hair? Most dogs would go for the trashcan, but noooooo - not Bayleigh! She's gonna be puking all night, isn't she. :wtf:

4. she might be.
I'm surprised she got it all down without barfing! Or she might have "issues" at the other end..thats what I'd be concerned about..:scared:

5. I can't believe she did it so fast!
It's so gross - SO gross. I'm just sitting here, staring at her and wondering what's going to happen next - although she appears to be absolutely thrilled with herself. :eyes:

It was ALOT of friggin hair.

Such goofballs.

Once my mom's dog ate one of her shoes. So, then my mom gives her the other one! :eyes: :banghead:

She said that she didn't know what to do with 1 shoe. :wtf:

(on edit: my mom is from New Jersey) :D

20. first YOU calm down
the dog will be fine.

He/she/it has eaten worse...trust me...hair doesn't even BEGIN to touch the stuff most dogs have eaten.

If he gets constipated take him to the vet...otherwise enjoy that he found a new fetish :)

It's not that big a deal.I have 6 dogs and two cats...trust me they eat hair sometimes.

22. Um, I'm calm, hon.
I'm more grossed out than anything.

Like I said, it was ALOT of hair. It's gotta come out, one way or the other.

And she's got this coughing/hacking thing going on - and wagging the entire time. :eyes:

Not the brightest bulb in the box. :)

24. She's doing great, thank goodness.
Leg seems fine - she's just spooked by the steps, so I have to go out there with her now.

The snow isn't helping any. ;)

12. Not likely.
I'm of the opinion that hairballs are hacked up because the cat's digestive system can't really use it. It's not food. A dog is like a dumpster with four legs.

13. I wouldn't worry about it
I've seen Border Collies eat giant hairballs with no ill effects. They're about half the size of a golden, so you should be fine.

15. they can get hairballs
they just don't cough them up.

you can help the hair along a little by putting a small blob of vaseline on your dog's paw so he can lick it off
or give him a tablespoon of canned pumpkin (100% pumkin not the processed pie filling) with each meal until you see hair coming out the other end. pumpkin is a natural laxative and might prevent the hair from clogging him up.

i know you can put olive oil in dogs food to help with dry skin, maybe it would help in a similar way to the vaseline?

26. Yes
I have a dog that gets hairballs from time to time.

Usually when his allergies are bothering him and he is licking a lot and ingesting a lot of hair.

28. No, but they sure can puke.
What's worse is that, like my cat Yogi, they can projectile vomit across the room. It's never pretty either. I grew up with mostly dogs and a few cats. I was more than happy to see the tornado shaped hairballs compared to the pile of horrid, wretched poisonous dog puke. Give me hairballs any day.
