Since we all love to debate the merits of music lists, I present The Pitchfork 500

http://fromclosertonear.blogspot.com/2008/11/pitchfork-500-our-guide-to-greatest.html

It's actually a book that Pitchfork (which is a great site, even though I definitely don't always agree with them on certain artists/albums/whatever) put out recently, with a couple paragraphs on why they chose each song. I don't agree with all over their choices, but I think it's a pretty kickass list overall.

And if you look around the internets, you can probably find a collection of all the songs to obtain for your listening pleasure. ;)

So, music nerds of the lounge, lets have a flamewar over why this list is or isn't bullshit!

1. I don't like Pitchfork (and the list differs from mine, not surprisingly)
It's something, though, how "Since U Been Gone" appeals to the snobby publications, too.

3. Haha, that is one of the songs I would have left off the list.

The inclusion of "Ignition (Remix)" by R. Kelly is a stroke of genius though.

:P

The list isn't that bad, I guess. Some songs I like, but many that are, well, Pitchfork.

7. Yeah, you tend to favour pop, so I definitely understand where you're coming from.
I guess I'm just DU's Pitchfork. :P

12. True, I do tend to favor pop, if not always pure pop
What are your favorites from the list? Just curious. :hi:

4. Any list with the sense to include Wire, Magazine or Wipers is by definition above average.
:P

13. I agree.
They totally left out songs from The Specials first album and the B-52 first album.

And no Madness?

20. "House of Fun" by Madness would have been a good addition I think.

8. well there's no Stones, Tom Petty, or Bob Dylan
and they have salt n Peppa and Outkast's "Hey Ya"

That doesn't bode well for the legitamacy of this list.

11. That's because this list deals only with late pre-history (1977)
You'd have to go back to early stone age to see those artistes

16. Good point.
There's a couple of TP songs I could see on that list.

I can see why they didn't include the Stones, though. They quit making relevant albums right around the time of Some Girls. Which is too bad, because their early 70s stuff was pretty amazing.

I would argue that something from Dylan should be in there, too (esp. Modern Times).

18. Yeah, there's plenty of stuff on there that could be dropped for much better stuff.

14. Not a bad list overall. But that blog theme has to go
Black text on a black/dark grey patterned background? :wtf:

I agreed with this list on quite a lot and was glad to see them get some semi-obscure stuff on there. I even approved of the inclusion of Journey and Hall & Oates ("Don't Stop Believin'" is a classic song, even if it is cheesy).

I found it funny how the list got a little thin in the late 90s-- kind of like how music started to suck right about 1995 or so. A nice touch.

Thanks for sharing this :)

17. I figured you'd appreciate a lot of the stuff on there.
There's a bunch of recent stuff I'd have considered adding myself. And I won't even front, I love "Don't Stop Believin'" haha.
