The Columbia Orchestra will present SYMPHONIC POPS on Saturday, February 7, at 7:30 p.m. at the Jim Rouse Theatre at Wilde Lake High School, 5460 Trumpeter Road, in Columbia, Maryland. From Broadway hits to blockbuster film scores, Disney favorites to Gospel music, there is something for everyone!
Music Director Jason Love has programmed some of Broadway’s most memorable melodies, including Don’t Rain on My Parade from Funny Girl, Anything You Can Do from Annie Get Your Gun, If Ever I Would Leave You from Camelot, and All I Ask of You from Phantom of the Opera. Highlights from Wicked will feature No One Mourns the Wicked, Dancing Through Life, and Defying Gravity.
Highlighting the magic of Disney animated features and their successive Broadway productions, Disney’s Wonderful World will include Alan Menken’s Part of Your World from The Little Mermaid, the theme from Beauty and the Beast, and A Whole New World from Aladdin.
Love has selected superb soloists to recreate the Broadway and Disney favorites. Soprano Theresa Bickham, who received her Master of Music degree from the University of Houston, made her European concert debut in 2007 singing La Traviata under the direction of Maestro Eduardo Müller. No stranger to musical theatre, she has also performed the roles of the Baker’s Wife in Into the Woods, Tess in Crazy for You, Nancy in Oliver, and Mrs. Macafee in Bye, Bye Birdie. Bickham is currently on the voice faculty at Towson University. Baritone John Dooley is a native of Woodbridge, Virginia, who received Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from Arizona State University. He has performed with the Central City Opera, Portland Opera, Tulsa Opera, Amarillo Opera, Opera Vivente, Bronx Opera, Opera Fresca, and the Opera Theatre of Northern Virginia.
The McDaniel College Gospel Choir, under the direction of Eric Byrd, will perform three Black Gospel songs. Columbia resident Dr. Glenn Caldwell, chairman of McDaniel College’s Department of Music, has arranged Hosanna, Changed, and The Presence of the Lord for performance with the Columbia Orchestra.
Music from Hollywood films will include classic themes from Ben Hur, Lawrence of Arabia, The Pink Panther, E.T.—The Extra-Terrestrial, and The Way We Were, as well as Tara’s Theme from Gone with the Wind and Gonna Fly Now from Rocky. Tickets are available online at www.columbiaorchestra.org or may be purchased at the Music & Arts Center at the Chatham Station Shopping Center, the Music & Arts Center in Laurel, or the Columbia Association on Wincopin Circle. Tickets may also be purchased at the door, although credit cards cannot be processed the day of the concert. Admission is $20 for adults, $15 for seniors over 60, and $10 for full-time students. For further information or directions, call (410) 465-8777 or visit the orchestra’s website.
Hope to see you there! :hi:
