We were like that daily for the last couple months, holding our breath hoping for the best. DH's last night of work is tonight. They cut the entire shift.

The last time I went through this was several decades ago, when I was a teen--my dad worked at Kodak, which did massive layoffs in waves. But that's back when "layoff" meant "temporary lack of work due to lack of demand for product"...and the people who were laid off were eventually called back to work. When did "layoff" come to mean "fired outright"? Ugh.
