2. Only indirectly...
Pierce had three sons, all of whom died in childhood. Benjamin lived the longest and was killed by a train derailment after his father's election and before the inauguration at the age of 11. All extant Pierce lines trace back to one of Franklin Pierce's 4 brothers and farther back to the Mayflower. I too am an indirect Pierce descendant...the bastard Bushes are something like 16th cousins.
