Books that SHOULD be made into movies....
With all of the re-makes that come down the pipe, you'd think that there aren't any books that haven't been put on film.

My choice would have to be Carl Hiaasen's "Lucky You." That would be a wild flick, but I've no clue how to cast it!

and Tilda Swinton playing Estraven

Years ago I wanted James Earl Jones and David Bowie, but they've aged out of the roles.

2. Call me crazy, but how about Faulkner's 'Go Down, Moses' as a 4-hour epic? A TV ministeries perhaps?
On the condition, of course, that they wouldn't have Morgan Freeman playing Lucas Beauchamp *or* Sam Fathers. :P

Or how about one of Derek Raymond's "Factory" novels? I think that would be the perfect source material for a bleak, nihilistic, but artful twenty-first-century crime thriller. I would suggest Tarantino as the director, but then the movie would probably have too much of his stylistic fingerprint on it.

16. The Ramona series by Beverly Cleary
I'm reading the books to MG Jr. right now (Beezus and Ramona, Ramona the Pest; up next: Ramona the Brave), and he's loving them. As we've been reading, I started wondering why nobody ever made a movie around this character before--Ramona is like a female Dennis the Menace, and her adventures are pretty crazy, but she's quite lovable. I looked it up on IMDb, and apparently there was a Canadian TV series in 1988...and lo! A movie is set for 2010! I hope it's good!

20. I have to admit I was wondering if I was wrong for reading a "girlie" series
to my son, but Ramona transcends gender. She's simply a spastic kid--sometimes naughty, sometimes overwhelmed by life. I'm fascinated by how "real" she is--her adventures aren't overly sugarcoated. But the stories are so fun and funny.

48. No I didn't. I suspected it would be dreadful.
I just finished the Chronicles and Legends again and they would be fantastic in animated movie form if done correctly. The problem is they're never going to be done correctly. D&D movies could be such a brilliant longrunning franchise if someone would just make the proper effort. It's frustrating.

Sutherland played Raistlin, yes?

27. I'm surprised nobody has done
The Secret History by Donna Tartt or Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole.

Both of them could easily be TRULY horrible, and CoD would probably be too racially questionable to do according to the book in this day and age. Not to mention the homophobia and Italian and anti-Semitic stereotypes. That book pretty much takes shots at everyone. :D

I'm not saying they should be done. I'm saying I'm surprised they haven't been done.

71. Think of it more as a space opera
The Mars trilogy is a series of award-winning science fiction novels by Kim Stanley Robinson, chronicling the settlement and terraforming of the planet Mars through the intensely personal and detailed viewpoints of a wide variety of characters spanning almost two centuries. Ultimately more utopian than dystopian, the story focuses on egalitarian, sociological, and scientific advances made on Mars, while Earth suffers from overpopulation and ecological disaster.

Red Mars - Colonization

Red Mars starts in 2026 with the first colonial voyage to Mars aboard the largest interplanetary spacecraft ever, the Ares, with a crew of the "First Hundred" colonists, composed for the most part of Russians and Americans. The book details the construction of the first settlement on Mars, called "Underhill". A debate among the colonists breaks out about the advisability of terraforming the planet, focusing on the two extreme views personified by Saxifrage "Sax" Russell who believes their very presence on the planet means some level of terraforming has already begun and it should be continued, a viewpoint held by "the Greens." Ann Clayborne represents "the Reds" viewpoint that mankind does not have the right to change entire planets at their will and Mars should be left in its original state. Hiroko Ai represents a middle ground, believing that a new way of living could evolve on Mars, a philosophy referred to as "Areophany".

The Greens eventually win out, through direct intervention in some cases, and the first steps to terraforming Mars start during the book.

And yes, it'd be PERFECT for a film. How could it not be? The complex plot, the labyrinthine house that expands on the inside, the feeling of hopelessness while trying to find your way back and survive . . . Cronenberg or Cuaron would have a field day with something like this.

75. "The Navidson Record" from House of Leaves.
Not the whole book itself, that'd be impossible.

But the film within the book within the book would make a great film.

79. I've read a bunch of Carl Hiaasen books and loved them, but
I think they're really difficult to turn into good movies because of the way they are written.

My favorite of his was "Skin Tight"
