Who wants to do some Passion bashin'?
How about we kick things off with some sequals for the The Passion of the Christ?

The Passion of the Crusades - The heroic story of centuries of war with Muslim's. Hey, they aren't Christian so they need to be purified by fire.

The Passion of the Salem Witch Trials - The heroic story of men and jealous women, burning other women alive in the name of God.

The Passion of the Inquisition - The heroic story of torturing jews and other 'heretics'; Hey it's ok.. they aren't Christians (someone else coined the name, who I forget.. pipe up and say something!)

Keep it going!

Then it would be time for The Passion of the KKK - The heart warming story of upstanding Christian men who understand the finer points of God's law. Like that good people only have white skin and everyone else is evil. Also, terror and murder are the appropriate ways to greet your new non-white neighbors. Fun for the whole family! 37. If this movie is making Jews look so bad then why is it
that the Christians are getting bashed? If you read the gospels, the Jews were involved in the process that eventually lead to the death of Jesus, there is no way to get around it. If Mel Gibson had sugar coated that part of it he would have made a mockery of the entire situation.

As it is, the horrible anti-semitism that was supposed to be caused by this movie hasn't materialized - big suprise! What has materialized is Christian bashing of the highest order.

As I said before, if this mocking were towards any other group besides Christians, it would not be tolerated here. For some reason, DUers can declare open season on us with no repercussion. How sad that people get their entertainment by belittling others.

45. I hate to break it to you
But the Christian bible is not exactly the most accurate of books, and its depiction of Jewish life, circa first century, is almost entirely a work of fiction. Writers, living under Roman rule, had to create a version of events that played down Roman involvement in Christ's execution, despite the fact that the Roman leadership was 100% responsible for crucifying Christ. The Jews living under Pilate's rule had absolutely no authority to execute anyone. Also, crucifixion was a uniquely Roman form of punishment, designed to send a message to others who might want to rise up against the Roman empire. And even if a mob of Jews had brought Jesus before Pilate, Pilate would have sent Roman soldiers to beat back the crowd, and possibly kill most of them, as Pilate was paranoid over possible insurrections of his subjects. Pilate would not have been wracked with indecision, either, nor would he be swayed by a crowd.

As the film has only been out a little over a week, it may take a while -- perhaps years -- for the seeds of anti-Semitism to grow. Just wait until this film hits the screens in Europe and Asia.

29. My adult daughter feels the same way...
and is shocked, that as a Christian, I do not approve of the violence in this movie. I explained it to her this way...

If I had run into a burning building and saved her life when she was a baby, but when I ran out with her wrapped in a blanket, I was on fire and later died and someone caught this event on tape...would I want her to watch the tape? Absolutely not! A movie where she could visualize how I showed my love for her, holding her when she was sick, feeding her when she was hungry, telling her stories, laughing with her and making sure her needs were met - yes. But would I want her to watch me suffer for the love that I held for her - no. I would think that instead of thanking me for her life, she would hold so much guilt for my final act of love, that the rest would mean nothing. The rest of the story would be what I would want to leave her with. She would always know my final act of love, but I would never want her to dwell on that alone and without the rest of the story.

This thread is not Christian bashing. It's talking about the social impact of a story told out of context, the intent of which may never be truly explainable.

43. Mel Gibson edited the film....
most of the anti-semitic stuff was removed, not by his wishes, but by demand. What might not be anti-semitic to you could be anti-semitic to someone else. The movie was scripted originally, without deviation, to passion plays written many years ago and performed in Europe. They were actually banned because people did burn down Synagogues. Mel Gibson was forced to remove the "really bad stuff" before being released in theaters.

I'm sorry you are offended by this thread, but you have a great opportunity to use the "Ignore" button.

It's all there in its anti-Semitic glory. The only thing Gibson removed was a subtitle of the crowd screaming out for the blood of Christ to be on their hands and the hands of their children. The dialog remains intact, it's just spoken in Aramaic.

31. One problem
A large portion of The Passion is not based upon scripture, but upon the visions of the nun Anne Catherine Emmerich. She wrote "The Dolorous Passion" in the 1800s, and much of the movie is based on her visions, primarily the torture and crucifixion of Jesus.

Read Mark's account of the Passion and you'll notice how different it is to the other Gospels. That's because Mark's Gospel was written before any of the other Gospels, in approx. 70 CE. Mark's Gospel, in fact, is recognized by biblical scholars as the source material for the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. The writers of Matthew and Luke took Mark's material and added their own interpretation of the events. Mark's account is the most "pure" version of the Passion. Mark's account does not contain the comments by the Jewish crowd that the blood of Christ would be on their hands and their children's hands.

Not surprisingly, Gibson's screenplay does not draw much, if any, material from Mark.

...read his original post and replies 6 and 8. Christianity can be defined by the Crusades, Salem Witch Trials, Inquisition, KKK and Cathars. Pure and simple. Guilty, guilty, guilty. That isn't Christian-bashing?

Yep, and the U.S. can be defined by slavery, the extermination of the Native Americans, sweatshops (here and abroad), the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, etc. Case closed -- the U.S. is evil, and should be wiped out. At the very least, we should all have to listen to how monstrous we are, day after day after day.

:puke:

The fact is, any ethnic, national, or religious group can be demonized, as long as you make sure people are only allowed to focus on the darkest actions, or the times when a nation or religion has failed to live up to their ideals. Then insist, loudly, that these incidents represent the true face of that group, and that anything else that may portray them in a more positive light merely represents "window dressing."

Show me one group of which that cannot be said, and I'll show you a group that has never been in any position of power any time in the history of the world.

I am sorry they made a stupid, inaccurate and all around crappy movie about your savior. I have nothing against Jesus, in fact he sounds like a great guy. I just have serious problems with the horrors that are committed in his name. Like this movie.

52. How curious, Rob...
You say that you weren't intending to bash Christians, merely Gibson's movie. But, in your first few posts, you "defined" Christianity as the Crusades, Inquisition, Witch Trials, and Ku Klux Klan.

Similarly, Mel Gibson strongly claims that he has no animosity against Jews, and merely wanted to illustrate what great a love Jesus had for us that he would consent to such a brutal death in order to save us. But, in his film, he (apparently -- I haven't seen it and don't plan to) portrays the Jews in league with a figure representing Satan, gleefully watching Jesus being flogged nearly to death, blackmailing Pilate into issuing a death sentence, building the cross in the Temple, etc., etc.

Isn't the symmetry wonderfully ironic? And might I suggest that blind spots are not restricted to members of any one belief system?

19. This is Gibson bashing
No one is bashing Christianity, they're bashing a movie. The Passion is strictly Mel Gibson's interpretation of the Passion story found in Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. He adds his own dramatic license to the film, as well as relying on the visions of a nun named Anne Catherine Emmerich, who envisioned the bloody torture of Jesus in the 1800s; Gibson used these visions in his film. Not surprisingly, Sister Anne was not a big fan of the Jewish people. "The sight of Jesus' sufferings, far from exciting a feeling of compassion in the hard-hearted Jews, simply filled them with disgust and increased their rage. Pity was, indeed, a feeling unknown in their cruel breast," Sister Anne wrote in "The Dolorous Passion."

Unless Mel Gibson is now the equivalent of God, the only bashing going on is against his film, and not Christianity.

"The Passion of Kid Dyn-O-Mite", a bio of Jimmie Walker:

Local standup comic. Got a role on "Good Times" by sheer chance. Pissed off the actors who thought the show should have been better and aimed more closely toward the African American community as being something to look up to, and without JJ being in the cast as he did nothing but inflate his own sad ego. "Good Times" ended 5 years later. Jimmie Walker now out of a job until 1995 where he makes a limpy comeback by appealing to white rich men by cracking pro-right-wing jokes.

In the end? Kid Dyn-O-Mite grew up to be Man Oh-ree-oh!
