Post the one song that defines you
For me, it has to be Nana Mouskori - Song for Liberty

I truly get a thrill watching Nana Mouskori sing this song.

Why do I love this song so much?

Consider:

A Greek national, singing an Italian opera, in Spanish, as an homage to the Statue of Liberty; an American icon - that was a gift from the people of France.

1. Come Home by Mavis Staples
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3XioCj_lwro

I was talking to a lady a few days ago, and these are the words she said...
if you see my child somewhere as you journey here and there,
tell him I'm waiting for my child to come home

I am waiting and waiting for my child to come ....
I'm waiting and waiting for my child to come...
if you can't come home will you please send me a letter,
a letter would mean so much to me. yes it will

Lord my child may be somewhere on his sick bed Lord
with no one there to rub his aching head...Oh yes Jesus

Lord my child in somewhere in some lonely jail
Lord with no one there to post his bail, oh Lord.....
listen if I only knew what town my child was in ....
I'll be there on that early morning train,
then no matter what's crime Lord you know this child is mine....
and I'm waiting for my child to come home.

4. My son has been away for more than five years.
He comes home in five weeks.

It's all I can think about.

I'm glad it touched you as well.

5. The Myth Is Real...Let's Eat!
This song is my thought process in a nutshell.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2DaKdUhcVXQ

In San Francisco you can be mayor at 18
But ya gotta be 26 to drive a cab

What goes on
Is not what we're told to see

Patrick Henry said "Give me liberty or death"
At the time he owned 65 slaves

The myth is real - Let's eat

Fake patriots say you can't burn the flag
But guess who whines the most
'bout having to pay taxes
To their country?

Decay
Decline
Cover up
Refine
Dow Jones
Where's home
When everything we lean on
Is up for sale

Ad lady purrs, "Drink our liquor, you'll get laid"
Next billboard says, "Don't drink and drive"

What goes on is not what we're told to see

Panic! Panic! War on Drugs
But you can buy beer at gas stations

The Myth is Real - Let's Eat

Pagan priests first used perfume
To mask the smell of burning flesh
Back in ancient Rome
The statues came unscrewed
Leaders change - just replace the heads

Decay
Decline
Cover up
Refine
We are
In life
Roulette wheel
Or the ball inside

Anyone out there stopped to think
What our lives might be like today
If Karl Marx was as good a salesman
As Walt Disney

The bacon brought
You home to cook
The lobster lets
Itself get boiled
Looks too hard to climb
Out of the pot with all the crabs
Fear the unknown -
Who taught you that?

One hundred million trees a year
Get made into junk mail no one reads

What goes on is not what we're told to see

Half of all Americans don't read books
I'm one of them, but you're reading this

The Myth is Real - Let's Eat

General Robert E. Lee
Freed his slaves before Grant freed his
Brian Wilson's legs
Severed by a train
The crew sues him for stress

Levis were once made of hemp
From the marijuana plant
One acre makes four times more paper
Than an acre of trees

More protein than soy beans
Threat to logging companies
DuPont and tobacco barons
Got it banned in '37

The world is made of connections
So many sheep in wolf's clothing
Scary times are never dull
How long before our empire falls

No one wants the Pentagon
Toilets for six hundred bucks
Japanese spend twice as much
On pinball as defense

Meanwhile concerned citizens
In Albany, Oregon
Try to ban a book
'Cos it makes fun of Santa Claus

We're told 80% of people like the President in the polls
While only 15% believe he's in control
And 64% of lowans surveyed
Want to be reincarnated as themselves

Wowee...

7. Tom Sawyer defines everything I hope I'm not...
Pedantic, lifeless, pseudo-intellectual, Republican, Ayn Rand nonsense.

A song that defines me? Hmmm. Maybe "Coat of Many Colors," by Dolly Parton, or "Country Roads," by John Denver. Neither would be literal, but both make me feel like they are describing me.

16. Darkness on the Edge of Town ( and Stage Fright , by The Band too, sort of)
Tonight I'll be on that hill , 'cause I can't stop
I'll be on that hill with everything I got
Where lives are on the line , where dreams are found and lost
I'll be there on time and I'll pay the cost
For wanting things that can only be found
In the darkness on the edge of town
