7. I worked in the legal biz here for years.
Well, I still do actually, although now I'm self-employed typing court transcripts. I was a legal secretary/paralegal from 1975 through 2000 and used to know many of the lawyers in Anchorage, but now, I'm out of the loop.

20. Anchorage by Michelle Shocked
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-hffcyJ1GAg

I took time out to write to my old friend
I walked across that burning bridge
Mailed my letter off to Dallas
But her reply came from Anchorage, Alaska

She said:
"Hey girl, it's about time you wrote
It's been over two years you know, my old friend
Take me back to the days of the foreign telegrams
And the all-night rock and rollin'... hey Shell
We was wild then

Hey Shell, you know it's kind of funny
Texas always seemed so big
But you know you're in the largest state in the union
When you're anchored down in Anchorage

Hey Girl, I think the last time I saw you
Was on me and Leroy's wedding day
What was the name of that love song they played?
I forgot how it goes
I don't recall how it goes

Anchorage
Anchored down in Anchorage

Leroy got a better job so we moved
Kevin lost a tooth now he's started school
I got a brand new eight month old baby girl
I sound like a housewife
Hey Shell, I think I'm a housewife

Hey Girl, what's it like to be in New York?
New York City - imagine that!
Tell me, what's it like to be a skateboard punk rocker?

Leroy says "Send a picture"
Leroy says "Hello"
Leroy says "Oh, keep on rocking, girl"
"yeah, keep on rocking"

Hey Shell, you know it's kind of funny
Texas always seemed so big
But you know you're in the largest state in the union
When you're anchored down in Anchorage
Oh, Anchorage
Anchored down in Anchorage
Oh, Anchorage

30. I've never been out there.
Is Adak a barren island, or are there trees? I always imagine it being rocky and windy, with just low vegetation, but I could be completely off.

In-state airfares are so expensive up here, it's hard to travel around, but we are going out to Nome for the Iditarod finish in March. I'm really looking forward to seeing western Alaska for the first time. There's so much Alaska, it's impossible to see it all.

35. Very barren!
The only trees were in the "Adak National Forest" which was basically a bunch of Christmas trees that had been planted. I think the trees were about 5 feet tall.

It was very windy and rocky. Adak is known as "The Birthplace of the Winds."

It was a great place to be a kid, though. It was a blast living there.

26. A most beautiful state!
I was there for a week in late June, 1979.

Stayed in a town called Homer on the Kenai peninsula and fished in the Katchemak Bay.
Ate king crab and Halibut almost every day.

Drove through Anchorage and loved it and the views of Mount Denali...

and he even bought a fishing boat last fall, so we're going to have some fun this summer. :) It truly is a spectacular place. I love when you crest that hill just before dropping down into town, and you get that incredible view out across Kachemak Bay to the mountains and glaciers. It's just breathtaking.

48. Beautiful pics!
A girlfriend of mine moved to Homer after college so one day my best friend and I took a spur of the moment road trip to visit her. It's gorgeous. I'd like to go back. We used to drive from the city to Beluga Point every night after work during the summer a few years back; watch the sunset over the water. It was a few minutes of zen like tranquility at the end of a long work day.

Each time I travel out of state and fly home, as the mountains and the water comes into view, it's like my soul recognizes I'm home. Alaska gets in your blood like that.

And you're right; we don't want her either. She makes me puke.

27. You all send out the people who, when Putin rears his head in the
US airspace, it's the ones from there that go out to stop it from Alaska. That's a service that's more done than to be American compared to the places where they aren't as American as real Americans, like Virginia or Alaska.

And more than that, I was in Alaska for 3 days last year and I got to pet a musk ox - not too many states can offer that!

:)

36. I like the people.
Spent a winter in Anchorage in the 70's - it was a blast. Loved all the great people I met and hung out with (Mountain View Teen Center). Took the train up to Fairbanks for x-mas and went out to Homer on a overnight (is Homer Spit different than just Homer? I can't remember. Did an all day sucker on the train ferry to Valdez too. Ooops (just rode the train back and forth, we didn't have a car or anywhere to go)

I had a waitress job at Danny's Pepper Tree somewhere out near the base (on Seward I think???). That was fun. He got busted for heroin dealing. All the good 'ole boys that I thought were truckers and construction workers drinking coffee and calling me darlin' were narcs!
