6. As far as airports go it isn't bad.

I've had reasons to be in Terminal A and C... C has more conveniences airside that's for sure.

Yep, it was a Continental flight: GSO to LGW via EWR. Since I was going onwards to somewhere else every time I've flew into Newark, I've rarely seen outside the airport itself. I have been out though, one year coming back the airport was snowed in, the plane from LGW got in just fine but there were not outbound flights to GSO that day, so since we flew international, Continental put us up for the night, once they figured out we came from London, UK.

If you've experienced Heathrow or Gatwick, well, it's a whole lot less commercialized than either of those two places and a lot less walking too. If you compare Newark to Charlotte or even Greensboro, well.. Newark is big city man, huge airport. Charlotte may be a US Airways hub and Greensboro may have been a Skybus hub (in its short life span) but Newark is definitely big city airport. I'd say here minimum check in times are absolutely necessary and I'd say add on more just in case the ToSsAs are running behind. Greensboro you can cut corners... they say 1 1/2 hr check in time minimum for international flights but from GSO, you can get away with 1/2 hour from departure.

7. Had my miles on Continental and...

could get around the place blindfolded. Terminal C does have better food and drinkable coffee than the others, at least.

But, a big airport's a big airport-- the real question is what are you doing after you leave Newark?

Your profile says you're from Orlando, so expect it to be much cooler than February in Orlando. Liberty implies you're in the military, no? Or, do you mean in the airport in Newark?

There is a lot of convenience in NJ - not a far drive to find just about anything. Somebody told me a while back that the joke is that everything is 20 minutes away.

It will take much longer to get anywhere than you expect.

Check out some of New Jersey's wonderful diners, where you can get a fabulous breakfast 24 hours a day. Try REAL pizza, hand-tossed.

11. Diners!!! And people who text msg while doing 85 on the NJTP

NJ has awesome diners.

But also crazed drivers. In the space of a week, I was TWICE almost hit by someone swerving lanes while texting and driving at least 85 mph.

12. DC drivers are actually worse

I lived in New Jersey all my life until 1990, and in the Maryland suburbs of Washington, DC since then. We visit NJ several times a year to see relatives. I'll take the NJ drivers ANY day.

Here in Maryland there is no concept of mercy, such as letting someone get ahead of you when their traffic lane is about to end. They have NO idea what to do with turn signals. I've often wondered whether letting the drivers behind you know which way you plan to turn is considered classified information and therefore a huge secret. And oh, the attitudes! Half the drivers seem to think that because they are some deputy associate to the assistant undersecretary of some obscure government agency means they are extremely important to their vital government mission and that everybody else better get outta their way or else. And they have the gigantic SUVs and Hummers to enforce that attitude. AND they text and/or yammer on their cellphones. On the Beltway.

On top of that, Maryland does not have jughandles for left turns. You make your left turns from the left lane, cutting across the oncoming lanes of traffic. Not only is this sometimes hair-raisingly terrifying, but because nobody believes in mercy, people won't allow you to get in the left lane to make your needed left turn.

I'm not saying New Jersey drivers are great because they're not. But it could be worse.

13. True - DC drivers are almost Boston-bad

Insurance statistics show that Boston drivers are (at least in terms of accidents per person) the worst. I did work for MASSPORT many years ago, surveying passengers about their experience at Logan, and the #1 complaint? Their fear of Boston drivers, and we're talking about respondents from places like Italy and France saying this.

But after those two near-misses on the NJT, the NJ driver problem is seared into my brain.

To me texting is far worse than driving drunk - I know plenty of people that drive at least competently when slightly over the legal limit, but it is absolutely not possible to drive competently when NOT LOOKING AT THE ROAD. (I'm not arguing for driving while impaired, just saying texting is even worse.)

14. I hear you about the Boston area

They are an altogether different breed of crazy. I lived in Worcester for 6 months in the early 70s, and even back then the drivers were insane. The way they raced hell-for-leather into squares, those plazas into which 4 or 5 or more streets empty with no lights or signage whatsoever -- brrr!

10. Depends where you are in NJ

There's North Jersey, which can be suburban-NY-rich or Sopranos-Newark-Oranges-awful

There's Central New Jersey (home of Dr. House and Princeton)

There's South Jersey, which can be pine barrens and the Jersey Devil, or tacky Atlantic City, or snooty Stone Harbor

Quite the mixed bag, New Jersey....
