Bill Maher on "Wet Mars" - - We want our money back !
.
.
.

Sorry, but I just luv Bill Mahers sense of the obvious

From his Blog:

Wet Mars

So Mars used to have water.

Which means what, exactly – that it might have once been a hospitable environment for Mormons? The NASA guys seem really excited about this, like they’ve finally got a line they can use to pick up women.

But I suspect their excitement comes not from the discovery itself, but from the knowledge that this will buy them another ten years of wasting money on useless space projects.

One NASA scientist was quoted as saying the existence of water on Mars was “the $64,000 question.”

No, it’s the $800 million dollar question, you’ve answered it, and now we’d like our money back.

1. Hey, I got my $ worth
Per/capita <$4

Find out Mars may have been able to support life vs. less than half the price of seeing "Starsky & Hutch"?

I'll take knowledge.

2. So will I
Anyone who doesn't understand why it's important to find water on another planet (especially Mars) just hasn't been paying attention or are anti-knowledge.

4. Exactly
I find it curious that we have so many people that are anti-science, though they will never admit as such.

9. it's all about priorities, not "anti-knowledge"
Yes, there is a lot to be gained from the space program and space exploration...

when we can afford it.

in the 50's & 60's & 90's it was a lot more affordable, now- not so much.

it's a little more important at the moment for us to get things a little more in order here on earth, than to fling our limted tax dollars into the cosmos.
IMPO- ocean research is more important to us as a society than space exploration, at this juncture.

and what about shit like this?:

5. Sad that a man that bright
Can be absolutely devoid of intellectual curiosity. Count me as one of the people who's glad to pay for his share of exploring space. Besides, the technology we develop for space has direct applications for fixing the environmental mess we are in. Energy production, efficiency, waste recycling, terraforming, and UV shielding are necessary avenues for study if we are going maintain a high technology civilization.

6. "devoid of intellectual curiosity." ??? now then you don't know Bill !
.
.
.

Heck,

Bill knows the bible better than some "thumpers" !!

He certainly is not devoid of curiosity, even though he regularly vents his opinions on religion, he is VERY aware of what religions are based on, and their origons . .

Most of his comments have a whole whack of research and "curiosity" behind them . .

took me a wee bit of following some of his "theories" and opinions to understand, not necessarily AGREE, but to UNDERSTAND his views . .

there's quite a difference ..

and,

he DOES interject his own brand of humour into alot of his views, so sometimes I just go for the "humor" and don't treat his comments, "blogs" or whatever as an attempt to preach a "gospel according to Bill" type of thing . .

that of course is just my own opinion . .

7. I know he's not ignorant
I watch his HBO show and watched pi for years before they canceled it. He does have interest in the Humanities, but every time he talks about science he reverts to a high school attitude of screaming "Nerd!" at the top of his voice. Like his diatribes about how space exploration is all about nerds searching for green 3 breasted women because they can't get laid on Earth. I find it so distressing because I am so fond of him.

8. That's about the way I feel
about BM.

I guess we all have our irrational spots.

I love, LOVE space exploration. It gives back many times what we invest into it.

Welcome to DU, leftistagitator! :hi:

11. is that still true, or just another canard?
kinda like repugs who say that tax cuts always increase revenues...

what exactly has the space program "given us" in the last 5 years, versus the money invested?

10. Horrors!
$18 billion for space exploration -- and innocent children will go hungry tonight! The humanity!

$450 billion for the Department of Defense -- nary a peep of outrage.

That's a big old honkin' $432 billion hypocrisy right there.
